Smoothing a Mosin bolt!

Lets start off with the stuff to cover my a$$. I am not a gunsmith just a hobbyist. Do this mod on your own free will, I am not liable in any way if you goof up your rifle. You know your own capabilities, dont start this project if you dont think you can handle it. This is intentionally putting wear on an otherwise fine rifle, but this process has worked quite well for me. Use this little piece of information at your own risk!

 

WHAT IS NEEDED

1) about an hr of free time.

2) a copy of Enemy At The Gates

3)600 grit valve grinding compound(from NAPA)

3)gun oil(I prefer Mobil 1 synthetic 30wt.)

4)grease(I use Tetra gun grease on all my guns)

 

 

 

OK now I am going to explain how to smooth the bolt. First off completely disassemble the bolt. You want to inspect any moving surfaces for rough machining. If there is something really horrible looking on the bolt, try to semi smooth it out with a jewelers file (we will do a nice smoothing later). These things were built during a war, so when they were made it was more about quantity than quality. So rough machining and poorly fitting parts is a common find.
