2C:39-3. Prohibited Weapons and Devices.

e.Certain weapons. Any person who knowingly has in his possession any gravity knife, switchblade knife, dagger, dirk, stiletto, billy, blackjack, metal knuckle, sandclub, slingshot, cestus or similar leather band studded with metal filings or razor blades imbedded in wood, ballistic knife, without any explainable lawful purpose, is guilty of a crime of the fourth degree.

And what's your explainable lawful purpose for possessing this prohibited weapon/device?

Launching light lines to pull up heavy lines. Target practice. Collecting.

What situations you could claim those in are limited, but they would make legitimate arguments for purchase in theory.

Ham Radio operators use them to raise wire antennas high up in trees..

Second try - the first attempt to reply for some reason said "sending report". I am not reporting you, Stever - honest!

Now back to the post attempt: I used my slingshot today to re-hang one end of my wire antenna that came down in last week's storm. It is now back up but, unfortunately, one end is now 25 feet lower than it was. I hate pine trees!

Anyone around Hunterdon County with a strong slingshot that wants to run a line over a 40 - 45' pine? I'll buy the beer!

I worked with a guy about 20 years ago that used a crossbow to shoot rafters. He had a small ball epoxied to the front of a long bolt/arrow and used a light gauge nylon cord for a pull, it worked really well. It would be perfect for that.

The ironic thing about that clerical mistake is that a slungshot (the intended device) remains 100% legal in NJ.

Don,

I did some research because I thought that was hysterical (they wrote the wrong thing, into law). Unfortunately, it is you who is mistaken...

"

Other names

They were also known as "slingshots," but had nothing to do with what is now known as a slingshot. Many jurisdictions' laws against "slingshots" were actually meant to refer to slungshots."

I guarantee if I carried a slungshot with no lawful explainable purpose I would get lumped into that group. and if some one was in trouble with a slingshot, you could show all the weapons (including the slingshot) and say 'which of these things is not like the other', and your attorney should be able to explain the mixup...

Ugh, I hate NJ, nevermind, you're screwed either way here.

"New Jersey State Police Captain Stephen Jones said that he didn't have any statistics on how many arrests there have been for possession or transportation of slingshots. But, he said, "I can't ever recall anybody ever running into it or reading about it." "

"Dancer's bill notes that the state's definition of "weapon" is broad enough that it can apply to almost anything "readily capable of lethal use or of inflicting serious bodily injury." "

Looks like folks did get charged with weapons offences, involving slingshots in NJ.  Ofcourse the perps did more than just possession of slingshots.

Not in NJ, but in NY, someone did get arrested for slingshots, back in 2012.
