MPA 0 Posted March 28, 2013 Im anout to buy forst muzzleloader. I sold bunch of stuff. Gonna take money and buy some stuff ive always wsnted and pay bills with rest. Anybody have input for me on girst gun? Looking at Thompson Encore.
Smokin .50 1,907 Posted March 28, 2013 What are you gonna use it for? If you want to merely extend deer season, then an inline is the way to go, but remember that if you use sabots you have to scrub that plastic out of the bore after about 4 shots. And the Encore is a great gun for this! If you want to really learn muzzleloading, buy a slightly used traditional percussion sidelock like a Hawken-style rifle. For just $30.00 a year you can become a member of a club that shoots real black powder in Vernon, NJ, just a short drive from Randolph. We shoot paper, novelty targets, and have Woods Walks that feature gongs and other specialty targets. The REAL fun of muzzleloading.......at a fraction of the cost of using imitation powder and sabots. DaddyNick 408 Posted March 28, 2013 as mentioned let us know yor intentions. also whether you want an inline, percussion, flintlock. the easiest to clean is the encore types. breech opens pull plug and scrub barrel. had an omega but it was a pain. very accuate but a hassle to clean. I have a white mountain carbine (percussiuon side lock) and its my favorite. dont think i'll ever sell it. i also have a renegade 50 cal. i may sell that only b/c its a safe queen. when its dry out i carry the white mountain, if its nasty out i take the synthetic/stainless encore. probably the only 2 BP rifles i'll ever need. now if i find a 58 big bore or a white mountain in 54....hhhmmm...may have to snatch em up. lol. DaddyNick 408 Posted March 29, 2013 Cool. Take a look at some of the cva models aside from Thompson center. i dont own any but have read good things about them. if you want ease on maintenance cleaning etc than go with a synthetic stock/stainless model. DaddyNick 408 Posted March 31, 2013 cool. congrats. aside from having a quality gun you have a company that stands behind there products. over the last decade I have sent a few guns back to them and aside from shipping they have fixed/repaired issues for free. the set trigger wasnt working on my fathers renegade...free fix i screwed up the the threads (on my white mountain) where the nipple goes so i could not fire it. sent them barrel they re-threaded it and gave me a new nipple. free. lastly i picked up an omega for a real good price. price was cheap b/c the breech plug was seized in the barrel. me being part cave man figured i could get it out. Nope. sent them the barrel they got the plug out. only expense on my part was shipping the items out. only time i spent talking with someone was when i was just confirming the shipping directions. i think on the white mountain i had to send a check for $75 (i think, I forget) b/c the women said the labor may not be covered (since it was my mistake). when i got gun back it came with my original check they never cashed. T/C has a life customer in me. post some pics of your gun. lets see it. Nick
MPA 0 Posted April 10, 2013 Guys need just bit more help. When i bought encore, i told guy " give me all the stuff i need to get going". He gave me a toothpaste tube of " bore butter" whats the best way to use that? Also he gave me a wood ball with a little metal thing on it and like a handle. Said it " starts the sabot". Do i need that? The ramrod has a screw on thing at end that i think does that. He also told me to run the butter stuff on the sabot to get it to slide down. Its still hard. Is that normal. And last he told me i could use two or three powder pellets. Do i need three. Is two enough?
MPA 0 Posted April 10, 2013 Sorry guys but none of my friends do black powder
DaddyNick 408 Posted April 10, 2013 have to run to work but google your questions. can you shoot 3 pellets? yes. but start with 2 for now. the ball with the rod on the end is the bullet starter. google that. screw on end of ramrod is for cleaning jag, bullet puller etc. google "bore butter" and its uses. No disrespect and I am saying this because I want you to be safe-if you are asking questions as basic as these please go buy a book on muzzleloading and read it fully before you try loading and firing your gun. When it comes to muzzleloading a little knowledge is dangerous. Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk

davenj8 0 Posted September 22, 2013 for hunting barnes t ez either 250 or 290 gr with blue sabot and blackhorn 209 powder cci 209 magnum primers will kill almost anything in the USA. for fun range stuff powerbelts or hornady bulk with sabot bulk. You can use pyrodez or triple 7 at the range but I think they do damage to the barrel if not meticulously cleaned right after shooting. the blackhorn 209 powder is more forgiving of cleanliness during regular hunting use where solvent smell or a fired shot may not be immediately available. the hunting set up is expensive but once zeroed you only have to shoot it to check zero and shoot game. The encore was a great long term buy... I love my original encore
MosinRob 1 Posted September 22, 2013 Boy you went back pretty far to answer this one lol. Yes you are correct bh209 is the cleanest and best burning black powder substitute. Pyro and 777 need just as much cleaning as any other powder after shooting. I left a barrel dirty got a couple months after being shot with pryo 777 pellets when I was a kid and it cleaned up just fine. As far as the projectile I have to disagree on some levels. One, a 250 or 290 barnes is going to shoot completely different then a powerbelt or another projectile. Also with using a plastic sabot and hotter burning powder, you have to watch for plastic fouling in the bore. You need to use a cleaner that cleans for it. The best bullet I've found to combat that is using a all lead projectile like some minnie or conical or hornady's new FPB bullet. It's a all copper minnie. Very accurate and deadly energy
