For emergencies I can see the prep; for bugging out... that's a different story.

Bugging out, this is where NJ really sucks. Unless you live on the northern border you are locked in. The only way out with a motor vehicle, bicycle or just your own two feet, is across a bridge. If the state shuts down all bridge access in an emergency you aren't going anywhere (especially in South Jersey) and even if they don't the bridge traffic would be at a complete standstill. Having access to an airplane or boat would be preferable.

You have to assess your own situation. When the shtf everyone wants to be somewhere else, but somewhere else may be no better than where you are already. If you plan to bug-out "in-state" by heading to the Pine Barrens or state forest, so is everyone else. You should have a "precise" location to bug-out to. Unless you have some secondary property or a place with family and friends that is isolated or can be well protected, most people may be better off staying put. Depending on where you live, prepare for the long haul and ONLY leave if you have no other choice. If you can, band together with like-minded people in your neighborhood or community. There is safety in numbers.

This thing cost more than my Smart car.

That being said it's way nicer than my Honda Foreman.

That thing looks very cool, but I'd bet those tires would be terrible after running in mud.  You'd have to somehow wash them out or the wheels would be so out of balance, you'd barely be able to go fast after some mudding.

Fair enough..... how bout this instead!?

Jeep that can handle land AND sea!?   I always wondered why during zombie break outs, no one took to the water!  you can fish for food, distill unlimited water... seems like it makes sense to me!?

Check out Argos. You can get ones that can hold 6 passengers, have tank tracks, its amphibious, and skids on top of deep snow like a sled. the only drawback is they can only do about 35mph max without aftermarket upgrades. And they are not cheap. I used to work for an Argo dealer and I got to drive them almost every morning, they are allot of fun.

Here's another funny one.  QuadSki:

Looks like it can barely turn on water like a real jetski, but I have to say it is pretty creative idea.  Also, you'd really have to wash this thing down really well after riding it in salt water.  :o

Will your car survive an EMP?  I have a 1979 Mercedes 240D.  With no modifications it will run on almost any diesel type fuel and with a minor modification it can run on filtered used fry oil.  Every car and truck built after 1985 has some type of solid state electronics in it, newer cars have computers in them more powerful than your first personal computer.  In the event of an EMP less than 10%  of all vehicles will still work.  Of course, you can always park your car in a Faraday cage

I think something like the Surly Moonlander will take you through almost anything and any conditions.

get a kid trailer, attach, put some floaty tires on it also, and you can carry an astonishing amount of stuff with you in terms of weight.

to give you an idea the last time I used mine (before my kid graduated to a 3rd wheel) the trailer plus kid came in at over 100#. pretty sure the trailer is rated to 200# gross, so about 150# of load capacity. that's a lot!

Something else to keep in mind, since there always seems to be construction going on, routinely check any planned routes to confirm they are indeed passible. A lot of bridge reconstruction is going on that can totally disrupt traffic flow, if not stop it all together. Better to know in advance.

WRT storing gas, while it is better to use Stabil or other fuel storage treatment, I have used 10 gallons of gas that was 6 months plus old that didn't have any treatments and didn't have any issues. It was mixed in with the existing fuel in the tank which no doubt helped. Mae sure to rotate your fuel so that it is somewhat fresh....and use a stabilizer.

A bicycle with a cargo rack might be a more down-to-earth alternative in that situation. It can go off road if necessary, needs no fuel outside of your food. It is silent and non-threatening.

You can also modify those child carriers that are sometimes put out for the garbage.  You can remove all of the cloth and make a nice bike trailer to haul stuff, too.
