Recon Racoon 49 Posted December 5, 2013 One Second After by William R. Forstchen I read this book in under 12 hours, and by the end made me walk around because I didn't know what to do any more. It totally makes you rethink how you prep, and how you game play scenarios.
High Exposure 5,664 Posted December 5, 2013 That book keeps me up at night. It is my big fear of what could happen because in my mind, an EMP strike is the attack we are facing. It is the easiest way for David to slay Goliath. Lob 1 of those over the US, and let us tear ourselves apart.

I agree to a limited extent, but that discussion is for another time, and another thread lol.

Underdog 1,593 Posted October 27, 2014 Just looking for well-written stories that deal with prepping, societal collapse, etc. It seems that there are a lot more of them these days, and a lot of them are a complete waste of time. Most of my reading deals with political issues, fantasy (and some science fiction). I read the first two books from 299 Days and it was OK, but not that impressive. I then heard an interview of Tate and he said that he was trying to get away from the gun-laden stories of socieital collapse and present himself as just a "regular guy". He didn't want to present himself as some crazy prepping, gun-toting wacko in his stories. However, when I read his two books, he seems to have a little bit of double-talk there other than the wacko part. I liked the Going Home series by A. American. I have not read any stories about biological or chemical armegeddon, as they creep me out much more than say an EMP or hyper inflation scenario, but I am looking to expand. Just curious what some of you would recommend, not recommend, or even just what you have read. Everyone and his or her mother has been writing in this "genre" these days, but the only series that seems to be "main stream" is Glen Tates, which is probably worth reading, but it is lacking something. Just looking for some new ideas for my Nook. It seems all of the stories are about a recent collapse, and I am probably most interested in that scenario, but would be open to other literature. tc556guy 0 Posted October 27, 2014 The ability to e-publish has resulted in a lot of eager guys with an idea for a story to get themselves found by the Kindle Crowd A lot of it wouldn't have seen the light of day in the old print -only era. Lights Out, the Deep Winter trilogy ( particularly the last book in that series ), Rawles and so many of the other books that often get touted by the prep community, aren't in my mind all that great. They have the seed of a good idea within their basic premise but in an earlier day would have undergone some more re-writes before gracing the shelves of bookstores.... I've been collecting post-apoc lit for thirty years now. Yeah a lot of its horrendous stuff. Some of it's good stuff.
