I think they are still taking orders on HRA service grades. If not then wait a few weeks, once they have enough of a manufacturer and grade available they will open up to taking orders for them again.

+1  I think they are still taking orders albeit with a 3-6 month delivery time.  Probably the best value going unless you're in a hurry.

Are you looking at specific grades in the M1? Are you looking at a collector or shooter? The prices you're showing are way high IMHO, like Dave said, look on the CMP for sale site...... I picked up a post war correct grade HRA for $800 on the site. Just keep looking ......

I've never been impressed with CMP's availability or pricing.

You mention NJ and NY "versions." Are you talking about M1 carbines modified for these states? The unmodified ones are indeed illegal here. See the relevant NJ gun forum thread here.

I have some affection for this gun as I handled it quite a bit (but never fired it) while I was a student at Xavier H.S. in NYC. They'd only let us shoot .22s in the basement range :)

The last time I looked at prices for M1s, they were in the $700-1400 range, depending on the condition. I'm sure one could be had 25 years ago for $100-200.

Unless you're a real history buff or have some other sentimental reason for buying one, then in my opinion the prices you're talking about are too high. Especially since the gun must be modified to be NJ legal (correct??).

Have you considered a nice-looking SKS ($400-700) or Mosin ($120-250)? There's a lot to be said for cheap ammo, ya know.

I remember when CMP (then DCM) raised their M1 prices from $165 to $175, and the mad rush to get orders in before the increase!   That must have been in the early 90's.  Back then they sent them direct to the buyer, via USPS.  You could come home from work and find a boxed rifle leaning up against your door.  Good times...

Respectfully, you're not really putting and SKS or Mosin in the same league as a Garand are you?

As I wrote my "relationship" with the M1 that goes back 45 years. Although, frankly, I have no idea whether it's more accurate or functional than the SKS (both are semi-autos) or the Mosin. I'm open to educating here because although I can read numbers I'm not an expert by any stretch.

What I know is a decent Garand costs 3x as much as an SKS and 10x as much as a Mosin, and the round is at least double the cost of the 7.62x 39 or 54r. If you have a sentimental attachment to the M1 by all means buy one and enjoy it. I think that at today's prices the M1 is not a very good value. Just my opinion.
