Govt panel on VA Tech shooting: "10 round restriction would have made no difference".

Recommended Posts

As many of you know, the Virginia Tech multiple victim public shooting claimed the most lives.

The shooter used 15 and 10 round magazines.

The government panel set up to research the shooting, came to the conclusion that a 10-round magazine restriction would have made no difference.

Here is the exact quote:

The panel also considered whether the previous federal Assault Weapons Act of 1994 that banned 15-round magazines would have made a differ-ence in the April 16 incidents. The law lapsed after 10 years, in October 2004, and had banned clips or magazines with over 10 rounds. The panel concluded that 10-round magazines that were legal would have not made much difference in the incident. Even pistols with rapid loaders could have been about as deadly in this situation.

Here is a link to the report.  The quote can be found on page 74:

The Review Panel consisted of nine highly distinguished members from a variety of relevant backgrounds. Members included a former Governor and Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, a judge, a psychiatrist, a professor of emergency medicine, a former FBI official who established the FBI’s Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, a former head of the Virginia State Police, a specialist in university administration, and a specialist in assisting families of crime victims.

If facts and logic mattered to them we wouldn't be going thru this again

Facts and logic do matter.

It's just that nobody ever tripped over a bag of emails when they walked into their office at the statehouse in the morning. And being a lazy loser never did much, either.

I 'd be careful using this report. First, the statement that a law limiting magazines to 10 rounds likely wouldn't have made a difference isn't based on a scientific study. Second, on page 75 the article reads;

"Cho was able to kill 31 people including himself at Norris Hall in about 10 minutes with the semiautomatic handguns at his disposal. Having the ammunition in large capacity magazines facilitated his killing spree."

Therefore they could use this report as a basis for an argument that even 10 is "large capacity" and recommend even less.
