Newtonian 453 Posted March 11, 2014 I'm sure this information is contained somewhere in these forums. Was thinking of buying a Yugo AK 47, but from the looks of it it's not NJ compliant. While talking with a local transfer guy he said a bayonet mount is one evil feature, which I knew. But: Is that sufficient to make a gun illegal? Would a bayonet mount on a Mosin 91-30 make the gun illegal? How about the fold-out bayo on the Mosin carbine? If so, are these guns illegal to buy, or to possess, or both? NicePants 58 Posted March 11, 2014 Pistol grip AND bayo makes it illegal. Also, mosins are bolt action. They're exempt from the evil feature thing. Same reason why pump action shotguns can have all the evil features they want.
lunker 274 Posted March 11, 2014 Start off with magazine fed. If so, then more than one evil feature makes it an assault weapon. If fed by any other means (i.e. lever, bolt action, break open, etc), then it is not applicable.
AverageJoe 95 Posted March 11, 2014 Bolt action you're G2G.
maintenanceguy 510 Posted March 11, 2014 For a rifle to be an "assault weapon" in NJ it must be semi auto. Then it must have at least 2 of the following 5 "evil features" pistol grip flash supressor grenade launcher adjustable stock bayonet mount. since a Mosin is not semi-auto it can have all 5 features if you want. And removable mag. SKS with fixed mag for example is semi auto but can have evil features but then you have to make it 922R compliant.

So would this be NJ-compliant: https://www.samcoglobal.com/1-sks.html It's got a fixed mag and a bayonet. Everything else ok?
RecessedFilter 222 Posted March 12, 2014 A fixed mag SKS is legal in NJ.
lunker 274 Posted March 12, 2014 You could chop off the rear of it and stick on one of those Saiga combined pistol grip/adjustable stocks. then it would have all the evil features and still be legal. A big FU to Jersey politicians. Sent from my QMV7A using Tapatalk
Newtonian 453 Posted March 12, 2014 Thanks to all for the advice. I'd sortof forgotten that semi-auto is what triggers everything else. I'm new to this stuff.
Newtonian 453 Posted March 12, 2014 A fixed mag SKS is legal in NJ. OK, please bear with me. Were I to do the necessary conversion for this gun to accept a detatchable magazine, would it still be legal as is? I hear it's pretty easy to do, sometimes as easy as removing the old internal mag. ogfarmer 138 Posted March 12, 2014 NO a SKS with detachable mag is illegal in NJ its on the list of banned AW
rightisright 3 Posted March 12, 2014 NO a SKS with detachable mag is illegal in NJ its on the list of banned AW +1 AND every detachable mag I have seen on an SKS (out of state, of course) looked and performed like it was made out of a few tuna cans cobbled together. Leave it the way it is and have fun w. it.
