Anyone Ever Hurt Hand Pushing Semiauto Pistol Magazines Into Grip?

Recommended Posts

I developed a small painful red lump and swelling on my left palm near where my hand pushes pistol magazines into the grip. Maybe I have been using too much force when reloading?  Anyone else have or hear of such an issue?  Hope it is just a tendonitis and a didn't chip or break any bones.  I shouldn't have watched so many action movies. Those folks slam their magazines in when they "lock and load."

Input from LEOs or competitive target shooters would especially be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

...I think if you're slamming a mag in that hard something's wrong. Either you're using too much force, or perhaps something in your gun is causing resistance to the magazine, but I've never felt like I needed to use enough force to get a mag in that it would hurt my hand.

But that does sound pretty painful, hope it feels better.

Oops, one more thing. Don't tell your NJ doc it happened reloading. Your doc is a government advocate now and that stuff is forever, no privacy. Say you were burning Bibles or beating off or something normal. Banging on the mailbox to get it open for the latest Obamacare mailings.

I've sliced off a nice chunk of flesh being overly enthusiastic inserting mags in my m&p. I've gotten a nice blood blister from a glock 19 too.

But that's strong hand getting pinched, not the weak hand inserting the mag.

Got you all beat. Left my bayonet inside one of my mags for storage. Didn't remember it was in there. The point was sticking out about 3 inches and it went right through my hand when I slammed it in. ;)

I've probably hurt every bit of my hands at some point or another with gun bits. Right now I have a nasty blood blister I've cut open on my thumb where I got it caught in the bolt of my shotgun, multiple cuts on my fingers from shotgun reloading practice, and a bruise on my knuckles. Crap happens, he is probably giving himself a bruise for no good reason.

My doc is a strong 2a supporter.  Every time I see him we wind up talking about our latest purchases.  He found it incredibly funny at Christmastime to donate to the NRA in the names of several of his colleagues that are very anti.  Hearing him tell stories about how much they complained about getting NRA materials was priceless.  So he did it again...

Point being - get to know your doctor.

Hey, that's ME!  Where do I start?  First of all, Vlad and Raz0 are faster than I am (and YOUNGER too, lol), and they have more experience at USPSA, but from what they wrote here, it sounds like their hands take a beating.  I'm a little slower (arthritis does take its' toll) but manage to stay cut-free while using my .45 ACP 1911 with 10 round Wilson Combat Mags.  Being on blood thinners I have to be a little careful to not get blisters if I can help it.  I like the fact that these Wilson mags have a metal stopper built into them so you can't over-jam the mag in with a slide-lock reload (no matter how hard you try).  My 8-rounders are Chip McCormack Shooting Stars w/ blue plastic base pad (those rounded corners don't "bite" when you slam a mag "home" even with using a nice wide extended mag well).

Using a gun that accepts a mag with a base pad definitely helps.  More hands get pinched when using mags that are flush with the gun's frame, as well as big hands using a smaller frame (since more "meat" gets in the way IMHO).  It really all comes down to what you're trying to accomplish (range practice, Gun Games w/ their respective rules regarding OAL, base pads, etc., and the condition and fit of the mags themselves.  One of my friends has a grip screw problem that causes the mags to "hang-up" because the grip screws come into contact with the sidewall of the mags, which then causes the mags to not leave the mag well.  That tight of a fit also requires the mags to be slapped up into place until an audible "click" can be heard.

Maybe get some A-Zoom Snap Caps and practice reloading in front of a mirror?  Ideally your hand gun should be close enough to the "target acquired position" at eye level during the mag change.  Smackin' your gun too hard will add time to the mag change AND throw the balance of the gun off, which then will require even more additional time to get back on target.  So practice till you're smooth....and remember that SMOOTH IS FAST!

Good luck!

Dave

He doesn't have a choice, and neither do you. Whether or not he is pro-2A won't mean a damn thing in a year or two.

Sorry, you don't have me beat. :D

The only thing Doc liked better than killing people was cutting people apart and sewing them up. The SOB asked me for my knife and I cut the living crap outta my thumb drawing it while reaching over my SAW. He laughed like a little girl. It was almost like he somehow made it happen.

He sewed the crap up and was quite delighted with himself. I couldn't feel anything for a week and thought my thumb was going to fall off. He said it was fine and not to worry about it. Then my hand got blown off.

Thank you all.  Saw the doctor. Anyway, may be something called a ganglion cyst and unrelated.  I still think it is from slamming the mags in too hard...it is getting better since I stopped. Also switched to a  SW 627-5 revolver...thank you Pizza Bob :)
