air/pellet gun

Recommended Posts

I've decided to try small game hunting this year.

Can anyone recommend a decent .22 caliber air rifle? Does anyone relatively local (within 30 miles) have one to sell?

Also, can I use one for plinking out of season at the Wittingham WMA, provided I have a hunting license? In season? It's like 3 minutes from my house.

The Gamo Big Cat that Oakridge listed is a decent spring gun.  A pcp gun is easier to shoot by comparison (since there is no spring recoil) but can be a bit labor intensive filling with air using a hand pump.

As for damage to a spring powered air rifle keeping it cocked.....unless you are going to keep it cocked for days or weeks at a time, there shouldn't be a problem keeping it cocked while hunting.  Even so, the worst case would be that the spring sets a little and you lose a bit of velocity, but you would have to keep it cocked for a pretty darn long time before that happens......cocked for a few hours while hunting should not be an issue at all.

Also, the nice thing about spring air rifles is that you need a certain amount of follow through to shoot them consistently for accuracy.  That makes them a convenient and inexpensive way to keep your firearm skills honed.

Plinking with an air gun can only be done at wma with state approved ranges. Nearest to you would be Flatbrook Roy in Walpack. There is none at Whittingham that I know of.

Muzzleloading Rifle and Shotgun Slug Range: for sighting in with shotgun slugs or buckshot, modern .17 and .22 caliber rimfire rifles; muzzleloaders; and air-guns in the calibers legal for small game hunting. No other firearms allowed.

Can you mail order pellet/BB C02pistol if you have a FID or do you need a P2P?

I don't think mail order is allowed unless they ship to an FFL.  You can go to any store that selles them in NJ or PA and all you need is an FID to buy a long gun.
