Just Picked Up a 10/22 (UPDATED w/ PICS)

Pretty excited about this... I've been looking for a while and just scored a used 10/22 for $100. It's a 1975 carbine with minimal use and in very good condition. Now I have to decide if I want to leave it as is, or start customizing it.

I'm not sure if 1975 is old enough but you should be able to find out what your new, 39 year old, ruger has that the new ones don't

Believe it or not, I found it on Gun Broker. It had a minimum bid of $100 with a "Buy Now" of $150, so I placed the minimum bid and emailed the guy to make sure he was willing to do a face to face transfer since he only lived 10 minutes from me. He emailed me back and told me if I bid the $150 and picked it up that day, he'd accept $100 as payment in full. I was a little hesitant (was this a scam?) but I took my chances and drove right over there, gave him $100, and brought it home.

 

I got a chance to go through it a little last night. It's a little more banged up than I thought it was. It doesn't look like it's been fired much, but there are some dings and scratches from being moved a couple times over the past 40 years. The front sight is a little beat up and some of the black (anodized?) finish on the trigger guard is chipped off. I'll post some more pics tonight... I'd be interested to see what you guys think I should do to restore it, if anything.

10/22's are great little guns.  Congrats on that find.  I'm with the others, leave it as is and have fun shooting it.  You'll probably find yourself getting another 10/22 anyway since they are just like Doritos (you can't have just one) then you could mod that one instead.

Leave it be, but if you must do the small $10 stuff like an auto bolt release and extended mag release.

 

You can also add Tech Sights and a Garand style sling to make it an Appleseed Liberty Training Rifle.  You can always find people selling their original wood stocks on other EEs if you don't want to drill into the original stock for sling attachment.

I finally had some time to tear into my 10/22 last night. Overall, it's in better condition than I originally thought. I pulled everything apart (except the trigger group - I was afraid I'd mess it up) and gave it a good cleaning. This thing was FILTHY on the inside. It may not have been used much, but it didn't look like it was ever cleaned.

 

The only problem I found during my visual inspection (still haven't had a chance to shoot it) was that it looks like the front sight is broken off. Can someone confirm that for me? It looks like the bead is missing, although I don't have anything to compare it to. Here are some more pics, as promised:

So at this point, I think may plans are pretty simple... replace the front (and rear?) sights and do some work on the trigger. The action feels "gritty" even after cleaning it. When I pull the charging handle back, I can feel that the bolt isn't sliding smoothly. Is that typical for these? Do I just need to polish it, or do I need to do a better job cleaning it?

Front site is easy to get - I broke mine once.

 

The bolt should slide smoothly.  I suspect some more dirt or you might find a rough spot if you run your fingers inside the receiver.

 

I bought mine in 85.  It's a little heavier than the ones made today.  Curious how yours compares.
