The Remington 870 tactical vs the Benelli SuperNova tactical.

Recommended Posts

Benelli all day and I'm not being a dick rider about it. It's a great gun sooo smooth and the factory pistol grip is great. If you want to trick it out with every accessory then the 870 is the gun for you because not everyone makes stuff for the snova but there is support for anything you actually would need. The benelli also takes down with the magazine cap it couldn't be simpler

I've actually never held a pistol grip shotgun that I liked better than the standard stock.  I held a Remington with the Magpul furniture, and it pointed much nicer than the standard stock.  In this situation, I'd pick the Remington because it's more comfortable for me.  That being said, both of them are great shotguns.  Pick whichever feels better in your hands.

Here is my story.

I used to own a Benelli supernova.  I shot it a few times, including a couple of 3-gun events.  I never loved it, and it is one of the very, very few guns I have ever sold.

I recently decided I needed a shortish barreled pump shotgun, and got a Rem 870 Express Magpul.  I love the thing.  I look for excuses to take it to the range.  It's fun and accurate.  I love the ghost sights.

So, for whatever it's worth, I vastly preferred the 870 over the SN, but that's just me.  You are probably different.

I have both of those exact guns.

I love the 870 as I meticulously worked on it to not only install every Magpul SGA 870 piece but also every 870P Police upgrades... its probably a $1200 gun now, its nice.

And I have that exact Benelli SuperNova Tactical, its easy 2x nicer and its not close, trust me. 870s get TONS of reputation points that come from history, reputation, popularity etc. Benelli is Ferrari and Lamborghini to Remington's GM. Corvettes are sweet and The Great American Sports Car but they dont touch the Italians in the least.

Trust me as I mean no disrespect nor disregard but the SNT is so much nicer.

The 870 has been around forever, and has quite the reputation.  It has a million accessories, at least a dozen variants, and you probably can't go wrong with any of them.

That said, I went for the Benelli and am damn glad I did...I absolutely love my Supernova Tactical.  It's quite possibly my favorite gun.  There aren't as many options for the Benelli, but the stuff I care about is available...  The feel of the Supernova is solid and smooth...

The ability to chamber 3 1/2" shells is nice, but not a big deal.  Your shoulder and wallet may not like the 3 1/2" shells too much...

Nobody said it yet, but why not both? ;)

Otherwise, I'd say the Nova... Even though I've only fondled one, if it's anything like my Benelli M4, (which is a dream to shoot all day any day), I believe it would be a keeper.

LOL I thought I did say that.

And for the Mossberg 590A1 recommendation, I agree it's a great great gun.  I got my Mossberg fix at the moment in my M930SPX.  I am pretty lucky so far, I have a decent shotgun collection in my M930SPX, 870 Tac/Magpul/P , Saiga-12, and Benelli SNT.  A 590A1 is my last real want in shotguns (other than say having all the Benellis like an M2 Tactical, and M3, and an M4.  But that just ain't happening).

Opps, sorry. Guess I need to slow down my speed reading.

I also have a 590 Mariner, circa early 90's I believe. It's a kick ass shotty. Never fails.

No idea what a 3 1/2 inch shell is.

Buying a 12 gauge pump based on "coolness."

Facepalm doesn't even begin to describe it.

Its my understanding that all three firearms are good choices.

Dont think its a big deal nor uncommon to take a gun's aesthetics into consideration.  :)

I have three 870s in my safe, and no Benellis. Then again I am a firm believer that shotguns need wood but that's an argument for another day...

ETA I should mention that two of my 870s are old school Wingmasters and the third is a Supermag, so they may be a bit better fit/finish than your everyday Express.

Benelli SNT is a top notch. You can get it without the pistol grip if you want, rifle or ghost rings. I have with and without the pistol grip, one in black, and one in desert camo.

I also have a 870 which never leaves the safe unfortunately, only because I love shooting the benelli. I am a remington fan, but to me the quality control have been not so good in last couple years, at least in my rifles and shotguns.

The only problem with benelli is the aftermarket parts are either expensive or difficult to find. I am still looking for another telescopic stock, extra 18" barrel, and mag extension OEM parts. Last OEM extension I pd $100 and collapsible stock $450, as much as the gun. Same for the barrel.

I  have had a total of 5 870's and 3 benellis over the last 2 years for pump shotguns.

Dayaaaaaaaaaam.  The M4 is like 16 hundy.

Though I think the prices have gone up on both the shotguns above since I posted this thread.

Now, the Benelli is around $500 but the 870 is around $700.

Couple years ago they were both around $400 iirc.
