What would i need for my 1911?

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone. I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with a few questions I have. I'm thinking about trying IDPA and maybe IPSC/USPSA, but I want to utilize my 1911. I know that in IDPA there is a division meant for the 1911, I believe you are aloud to run 8+1, is there a similar class for IPSC/USPSA? Also, I can't seem to find any information on how many magazines I need for 1 stage. From what I understand, in the other divisions in IDPA, you would use 3, but would I need more due to the lower capacity magazines? Thank you guys.

You need at least 3 for IDPA and at least 5 for USPSA. If you have 10, bring all 10 because you drop them in the mud sometimes and cleaning them there can be a pain. Either way bring a mag brush. Invest in some Wilson Combat ETM mags or the Chip McCormac mags because they come apart quick and easy for cleaning.

Read the stickys and watch the videos in the threads for USPSA and IDPA on here.

There is a division for 1911's it's called Single Stack. You can use a 45 and shoot major 8+1 and a 9mm and shoot minor 10+1. IDPA you can get started with a little less equipment. The holster and mag pouches have to be worn at or behind the hip bone for both games. You can carry 2 mags on you and 2 others, one loaded and one with a single round for loading and making ready.

When I shoot SS in USPSA I have 4 mags on my belt and two other in pockets very rarely will you need more and if you do you have zeroed the stage most likely so just stop and laugh about it.

Don't get to worried about coming out to shoot everyone is great and just be safe and know how to clear jams and how to handle you pistol. Once you do it you will be hooked!

next match is Shongum this Saturday.

Hey FLHX I heard if your shooting SS major and you draw a mag from your pocket after the beep, you automaticly get moved to the open class for the day, is that true?

Thank you guys for the quick responses. So bascially for IDPA you suggest 4 magazines, 3 loaded to 8 rounds and one with just 1 round. I would be shooting a 45, but can I get away with the 8 round magazines in USPSA or would I have to invest in 10 rounders? Again thank you guys, it gets a little confusing looking at all the different rules and regulations for the different sports, plus not to mention people saying "well at my range we do this".

I have never heard such a thing.

The only way you would need to use 10 round mags for a 1911 is if you wanted to shoot in Limited 10.  You could shoot your 1911 in Limited 10 if you chose to do so. Limited 10 has fewer restrictions on gear placement than SS.  I stay in SS when shooting my 1911 in either major or minor. People say well at my range we do this maybe shooting a different type of match and could make up the rules and at level 1 matches no one checks the guns or worries about equipment placement. They leave it to the competitor to monitor themselves. I like to shoot by the book so if I ever get to a level 2 or 3 match I know my equipment is ok.

Yes that is correct with the mags bring as many as you have but you can get by with that amount.

Yep, if the pocket is in front of your hip bone.  If it is your back pocket, it is ok.  The rule used to be if you grabbed a mag out of your front pocket at "make ready" you got bumped into open.  This caused a lot of problems and eventually uspsa got its head out of its ass and changed it.

If you are going to shoot SS, get 8 round mags.  10 rounders will not fit in the SS box.

Ok cool thank you. I also came up with a few equipment questions. I have 2 Wilson 47Ds and was planning on buying more, but i saw ETMs suggested earlier as well as Chip McCormac...any particular reason I should switch from what I have? Also, holster wise I was thinking about going with the comp-tac international with the belt mount, good bad or indifferent?

Sounds good! Thank you guys very much and I look forward to competing with you one day soon.

How about tomorrow at Shongum? You register (PM me with your name) and I'll bring a holster (non-rail 1911), mag pouches and mags. You have to be there at 8:45 AM for the new shooter briefing. I will be there at that time also as I am bringing another shooter new to USPSA. You can pay the $20 match fee or join USPSA for $40 and shoot the match for free.

Bunch of friendly people in a low pressure club match - you can't beat this deal with a stick.

Gotta register soon.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Thanks 2Alpha and FLHX.

Marlin, the 47D's are the same as the ETM's just the base pad is diffrent.

Lots of guys use both.

I have ETMs exclusively so I can't check but I thought the ETM tube was longer than 47D, to get the 8th round in more easily/reliably

Anyway, Tripps rock but they wouldnt feed SWC in my Springfield. Otherwise I'd have gone fully Tripp.

I wish I could but I work saturdays. If I thought of this earlier I would have switched my day off. For future reference though where is Shongum?

Close to Hackettstown, NJ.

I believe that Shocker is correct about the slightly longer body length of the ETM's. Also the witness slot on the ETM mag is toward the rear of the mag, rather than in the center like the 47D's. This is supposed to impart more rigidity to the mag body. I have used 47D's for years (like from the mid-80's) with no problems.

Upcoming matches are: Central Jersey - USPSA 4/13. Phillipsburg - IDPA 4/12. Easton - IDPA (Huge match) 4/27. Maybe next time.

Adios,

That's a good price. Even with the Brownells discount it is about the same.

Order as many as you can afford. You can NEVER have enough mags
