I see a few on gunbroker and wondering if anyone has gone this route before. I dont know anything about ak's but assume it is legal to do since its similar to an ar stripped receiver. I know you need to follow the 995(i think) compliance rules and us made parts deal. how difficult is it to finish a build from here? any special tools i would need from here to finish it? i think it would be a cool project to do.

I disagree. If you are going to do a full conversion, this is perfect. In fact, I'd like it even better if the gas block and fsb were removed also. It would save you the time of cutting them off.

you guys realize this is a .223 barreled receiver

With a 223 saiga , I have read that a surplus 5.45 bolt will work however the firing pin won't be spring loaded.

I have never done this before but I did stay at a holiday inn last night :)

EDIT: here is a great comparison if any one cares..

If you don't want to beat around the bush and get answers from the pros join the saiga-12 forums, they have a section dedicated to each caliber

you will find a lot of info there and ask questions of what parts you could use

If you're planning on converting a Saiga, the only thing you're really missing that you'd use from a stock one is the bolt, gas tube, and dust cover.  Source those, and see how much money you'd be in.  If it's more than a complete one, don't bother.

You wouldn't even use the gas tube.

The bolt is the main concern... If you use a 74 bolt for the 223 conversion, you need to make sure to check the headspace. If it needs to be adjusted, that could become a pain.

thanks guys, after looking into the parts i would need im not going to be saving much from buying a complete saiga and stripping it. And the upside of that is i can see the complete rifle first and how everything works. Not just jump into my first ak blind. Plus there's alot more support and videos on a conversion rather than a build. thanks again guys but im gunna go that route and wait and get a full saiga and strip it down.

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
    • 27.00 and change in tolls to drive down the shore from Rutherford,  47.00 in tolls to go out to Long island to visit dying relatives. Now I read they are going to raise the fees in the DMV. Murphy lied just to get elected when he said that seniors will get a significant tax break with his StayNJ" program to stop us from leaving.   Keep voting for democrats...this is what you get.  Tax and spend is all they know.  Never cut anything.  This state sucks.
