dobie 0 Posted April 12, 2014 http://www.statisticbrain.com/gun-ownership-statistics-demographics/ Not too much surprising here. Gun ownership has generally declined if polling is accurate. How many gun owners now say "No" when asked by a pollster if they own a gun? Some people may just want to stay under the radar as much as possible when it comes to their gun ownership. I actually think gun ownership has gone up in the last few years and I think NICS data would bear that out. In certain circles, however, especially here in NJ, people are incredulous when you say you own guns. Especially "guns" - plural / multiple. That kind of information just does not compute for them
Vlad G 345 Posted April 12, 2014 I too tell strangers on the phone what I own. Because obviously all those new gun owners I personally know have come about because lots of existing owners lost their guns in boating accidents or something. Because somehow 8% of the public has given up their guns in the last 7 years while we had record gun sales. Because "gun in the home" implies only one of the people in the home owns a gun not all members of the home.
DSD1026 48 Posted April 12, 2014 those stats are bullsh*t and we all know it.. there are a record number of new gun owners.. there's a reason towns are taking 3-6 months to get permits... i would say 30-40% of all shooters are less than 1 year into it.. (these are guesses, mind you).. media spinning to what they want to show, thats all...
mipafox 438 Posted April 12, 2014 Gallup has been fairly good in the past accounting for such things. I doubt that was a Gallup poll, is there a link to it? It looks more like Social Survey poll (ant-gun organization results) which generally run about 20 points low. Not 20 percent of the question result, 20 total points. In other words, or numbers, 36% would mean 56%+.
Vlad G 345 Posted April 12, 2014 It is from gallup indeed: http://www.gallup.com/poll/1645/guns.aspx its just that look at the fluctuation on that poll, it makes little statistical sense to assume people turn into gun owners and change their mind that much.
