Storing long gun without a safe

Recommended Posts

Get a gun cabinet, bolt it to the floor or wall and lock it away. Cheaper but better than nothing. Trigger locks will prevent prying fingers but not stop anyone from stealing them. Gun cabinet might not either, but make them work for it at least.

Companies like Homak, Stack On, etc... make them among others.

I have a locker, not a safe. It does the job. But I also understand that if someone had a crow bar and 20 mins they will take it. And also it will be destroyed in a fire. But I don't see anything wrong with a long gun with a trigger lock . I would also add a hard sided case with a lock. Maybe store on too of a closet or under a bed.

I have a crawl space room that's surrounded by cinder block, and barely tall enough to fit a 28" barrel. One door in, which I've fitted with a combination lock/latch. As with anything, it won't stop a determined thief. I don't think anything will. But it will keep out whom I want to keep out. I also have individual Stack-on safes for the pistols and a Gunvault which I keep bolted near my bed (not biometric - I'm told they're bad).

I'll consider a full sized safe when I own a few more long guns, and after considering where I'm moving to when I leave NJ and head for "America."

Consider a "Jobox" like what they use on a construction sight. You can fit plenty of guns in it and use it for tools and such when you escape to the free world.

This is what i use for now. Works real well. I have 3 large ones and a security cabinet

One of the best things you can do to protect your firearms is discreteness.  Don't advertise that you own guns.

Precisely!  Outside of a few family members, my two references, my lawyer, the range and shop/website personnel I patronize, and the local PD (and of course those on this forum :D ), no one knows I own guns. Certainly not any of my "nosy neighbors" know (most are hard core "progressives/anti's"). When I'm expecting a pkg from UPS, I make sure I accept delivery of it personally, so that it isn't ever "left with a neighbor" either deliberately or "accidently."  I'm carefull to ensure that I'm not loading/unloading my shotgun case in the back of the SUV while neighbors are outside (I have to raise the garage door to do it).  If I ever do get a full size safe, I'll have to take measures to ensure my neighbors don't see what's being delivered.

This also brings to mind the issues with local PDs that do "more than they should" in re your FPID application.... like contacting your employer, etc. I have heard that some departments will interview neighbors (ie. those not necessarily identified as the "references").  Totally unacceptable if the neighbor wasn't declared as one of the references, for this very reason.

If my thinking seems "extreme,"  I only point back to the days when I was a HAM operator. I lived in a garden apartment complex. At the time, I only had the license and no equipment, antennae or anything. One time, one of my HAM periodical(s), was "mis-delivered"  to one of my neighbors by the USPO. Not sure which one, but I did receive it in my box, eventually, with the following written on it (in red ink):

Warning - Do not interfere with the TV reception of your neighbors!

The next day I got a PO Box. Have had it ever since.  :)
