Talk to me about 7mm rem mag

Recommended Posts

1973 Ruger m77. My fathers rifle. Hardly used.

What are your opinions on 7mm rem mag?

My people come from the northwest. I guess it was a popular hunting cartridge? Flat trajectory?

Any insight and wisdom is appreciated in advance

Last year, during a 600yd MidRange prone match at Cumberland Riflemen, a shooter on a 7mm Rem Mag was squadded on the firing line just to the right of me.

A very disconcerting match I'd like NOT to repeat.

Even without a muzzle brake, the noise and concussion were brutal.

I began to time my shots BETWEEN his to avoid the induced flinch.

My dad gave me his Parker Hale bolt in 7 Rem Mag many years ago. I bring it to the range once a year. Big blast, lots of fun, very accurate. I fired at a steel plate, ar500 at half-inch thick from 300 yards. Put a huge dimple and crater in that, one more shot in the same place may have gone thru it. You can get reduced recoil rounds for it, makes it much nicer to shoot.

Belted magnum double ouch!.  Perfect for long range shots. Hornady  162 BTHP match or AMAX over 56 grains Hodgdon H4831 awesome combo (YMMV). Don't worry about how many rounds to take to the range. One box is more than enough.

It's one of the few belted magnums that is comfortable to fire. I never found recoil to be a problem with this round, even from the benchrest, provided the rifle was stocked correctly. (A long action, 24" bbl., scope, mounts and rings and a walnut stock usually equate to some substantial weight to help dampen recoil.) The 7mm Rem. Mag. could be considered the minimum for an all-around cartridge for any game in North America. Case capacity is 83+ grs. of water, so it is not small and takes a bit of powder to feed it. The cartridge works best with slow-burning powders with the case loaded to almost max. capacity. I've had good luck with faster burning powders like 4064 making light loads but it excels with slow burners like 4350, 4831, H1000, 7828. I've had good luck using just 4350 & 4831 for all my loads.

Yes, it shoots flat and can be accurate too.

Belted magnum cartridges headspace off the belt, not the shoulder of the cartridge. Three types of cartridge cases depicted below. There is also a rebated rim cartridge, but we'll ignore that for now.
