NICS open on Good Friday? or this Saturday for that matter?

Recommended Posts

for the record  I’m not blaming state employees, it’s the lawmakers that dream up all this stuff. On one hand they tell us we need more gun laws blah blah blah and on the other hand the NICS is controlled by non-essential employees. NJ should do it like PA or let the NJ Police control; it since they are 24/7/365 otherwise what's the point is because the state could outsource like DMV. Think about this, you have to fill out the handgun permit and wait to so you could get a NICS check?  Is that  pointless or what, the state loves paperwork…

(EDITED)

NICS should be an essential operation.  We cannot purchase firearms on any holiday...IMO it's infringing on the 2nd Amendment...but we have bigger issues to deal with right now.

I say the poster posted pure BS or his dealer never actually ran his Nics or he might have ran it early if he was a regular.

No way he walked in at 7 and got approved...

^^^THIS^^^^^

Probably why we're not getting an answer on who it was.......

I think his point is they are accessing a National Database and like you said the State Police have delegated this task to their non-essential civilian employees. Non-essential equals off today, Columbus Day and for foul weather. Good work if you could get it, LOL. So if that’s the case the state should have outsourced this function since the State Police aren’t the ones actually performing the NICS. Just another reason why NJ firearms laws are a joke.

Now take PA for example…  Pennsylvania Firearm Dealers and County Sheriffs access the PICS program through a toll free telephone number, which is available for service from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays. If an individual is eligible to acquire a firearm, the PICS background check replaces the former, mandatory five-day waiting period. Operation has shown that approximately 60% of the individuals attempting to purchase a firearm are approved within minutes.

PA has an automated system that the dealers can punch in a PA resident's DL number to get an approval without ever talking to a human. A PA dealer only needs to talk to someone if there is some problem or is doing a check on a non resident. NJ will probably never go to an automated system because it would help sell more guns and runs counter to their philosphy of total contol over the process.

I don’t think streamlining the NICS process would create a spike in gun sales but I do agree they aren’t going to make it easier for NJ gun owners. Many people could only allocate so much funding for our pastime regardless of which NICS system is in place. We would be lucky if the NICS was our biggest problem. Our state’s firearm’s laws are only a symptom of the state’s underlying problems. My view is if anything was streamlined in NJ State government that entire bureaucratic process would collapse.  NJ State government thrives on and introducing new rules & regs because it justifies their existence and keeps political hacks employed. Remove the red tape and the hacks would be gone and the state would run more efficiently and actually get some things accomplished.

I purchased a pistol this morning.  NICS was submitted probably around 1030am and it was approved within 30 minutes or so.  Might've been sooner but we were busy chatting it up expecting it to be long so didn't actually see how quick it was...

They definitely seemed to be making an effort so good on them this time..!
