Another transport question...

Recommended Posts

Okay I know about transporting firearms within the state - only to and from home - place of business, range, shooting event, or hunting. Similarly if you wanted to go to another state you should show that you are going to a range or hunting (such as in PA). How about if you have a carry permit for the state of PA (or other neighboring state) which of course allows you to drive around these other states carte blanche for the most part (exceptions of course being gun free zones) without fear of reprisals. Is it legal then to simply make a beeline for the PA border with carry permit in wallet without any intent of going to a range/hunting area in this case?

Sorry if I'm opening a can of worms, but I thought it was okay under FOPA (of course this assumes that the LEO is familiar with FOPA).

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

IMHO and others, it is legal under FOPA. Now, there are others that disagree. :unknw:

Well if it's not legal under FOPA, how is someone without a CCW permit supposed to get a gun to a place where it's legal to have one?  Can one really be expected to have to travel from home to range before engaging in the rest of a trip?  Seems like a logical conundrum to me.

I just did this on sunday. drove to philly to hang out eat cheesesteaks and walk through eastern state penn. I brought a printed copy of AG recirpocity and a copy of FOPA. I also brought my range bag with extra ammo just in case but locked the firearm and the ammo separate from each other until crossing the bridge. What would stop me from saying "Im going to Philly to get some range time in with my friend from warminister, not sure which range he wants to go to yet."........On the way back, what stops me from saying...  "i was Just visiting a friend in Scranton this weekend to get some private range time in, had a great time!"

yes its annoying that we have to do this and its still sketchy as hell but that would have been my excuse either way had i needed it.

This topic has been beaten to death!  It's like asking permission to inhale oxygen.  Jersey people are so used to having everything in writing, that when it isn't specifically written that you CAN do something, they (tin foil hat types and Newbies) always ASSUME that what ever it is that they wanna do must therefore be ILLEGAL, lol!

You people would have a really tough time in Stowe, Vermont:

On the Court House door, on a single sheet of office paper thumb-tacked to said door is a sign:  "Please, NO firearms in the Court House"!

In fact, ALL of Vermont's firearms law is on a single, printable piece of office paper.  It says what you CAN'T DO with a gun.  PERIOD!  If it ain't on the paper, you're GTG!

So take-off the Tin Foil hats, relax, and enjoy pumping lead back into the ground from whence it came, lol!

I just had a minor fitment issue with a caliber X-change 9mm kit for a Sig 229 and Sig wants me to FedEx the kit and 229 frame to them. Is it allowed for me to drive the package to a FedEx hub?

Maybe, I posted a thread recently titled is it legal for me to do this with a handgun - check it.

Absolutely fine. You are shipping it back to the manufacturer for repair and going to FedEx is a reasonable deviation. Pack it securely and declare it, and make sure you use the fedex customer counter and not kinkos.
