cheap eyes and ears

Recommended Posts

Home Depot or Lowes , disposable plugs and any ANSI approved eye protection

I use Home Depot glasses for most of my shooting, as for eye protection just make sure they are ANSI Z87 standard (I believe the latest cert is Z87.1-2010).  This will ensure that the glasses at least meet the minimum OSHA standards for impact and other hazards.

I need to pick up maybe 3 sets of eye and ear protection for guests at the range. Something that's good protection but not going to cost a ton as I normally don't have guests super frequently.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Actually, rite aid for the plugs too. Smaller quantity and more variety. You want the 33dbr ones. Home depot, lowes, or harbor freight for the glasses.

I had a similar goal, so here is what I came up with...

From left to right:

1) Safety Glasses from Harbor Freight - $1.59. In fact, they seem to be better than my other glasses i bought @ Cabela's for around $10. They are quite large and they have kind of extended plates on sides that might help against flying shells and pieces.

2) Safety Glasses (smaller ones in a photo) that I bought in a Tools section off my local Walmart, I can't remember the price, something around $7. They are made by 3M, so not a complete junk supposedly.

3) Disposable foam plugs - sold in different quantities, I think a dozen goes for ~$2 in Walmart hunting section or so. I always carry a pack of those, because one of my friends has pretty sensitive hearing, so sometimes she prefers to have both larger earmuffs and those disposable foams used together. For outdoor activities (like shooting clays) those plugs are sufficient enough, in my view. I would personally (purely from my own feeling) not recommend using them at indoor ranges...

4) Champion Ear plugs (I think, made of some silicone or so) - my latest find. Cost like $3 in Walmart, but they seem to be better than anything else I tried so far. I only regret that the last time I was at Walmart in Nazareth, PA, there was only 1 left there.

5) Large black safety headphones branded as Winchester. Cost like $10 at Walmart, can also be in pink color, if I remember correctly. Those were my everyday headphones until I found Champion Ear plugs, but I still have them in my range bag just in case...

I would never rely on foam plugs indoors for a new shooter. There's no way you can be assured they have them in properly.

If you're instructing new shooter's wouldn't proper use of the provided PPE be part of the instruction ? Wouldn't you as the instructor make sure they had them in properly before bringing them onto a live range ?

How can one person tell if another person has a rolled up piece of foam DEEP in their ear canal providing a complete air seal? and also that it didn't loosen over time? The answer is not "speak up if you think it got louder" they are new they have no idea what loud should be.

My point wasn't to be a smartass to the OP I seriously think I'm providing ear health advice. I got tinnitus and i will forever rue the day I thought my plugs were in enough.

I didn't take it as you being smart to me. I agree. I prefure over the ear to in hear. At the indoor range I use both. I have weirs shaped ear canals and even iPod type ear phones fall out of my ears easily. I wouldn't trust plugs alone personally.

Seems the Walmart near me does not have Much in the ways oh hunting accessories. Booo

Yes you can, do the clap test. It's not hard.

Whereas I guarnatee you that for most people, muffs over glasses WILL gap at some point. Do both and they likely won't hear naything unless the muffs are electronic. (which BTW is my preferred setup if I have to instruct anyone).
