adding a rail to lower handguard

Recommended Posts

Anyone add a rail to your lower handguard? I can't find a lower handguard I like with a rail so I'm thinking of buying a kavar lower hg with the heat shield and a magpul rail (mag409-blk) still need to measure the lower hg to make sure I get the correct length. Then drill holes in the hg and mount the rail. I'd like the option for a bipid or an angled foregrip.

Thanks for the input and suggestions in advance.

having run an AK (and AR) with various front grips.. both angled and traditional... I can tell you at the end of the day I found my shooting to be far better without either... I think they are silly...

when you actually hold the front of the gun with your hand clamped around the front you are really controlling the front of the gun.. this makes the gun more stable and follow up shots faster... when you hold any kind of front handle that is under the gun you have a tendency to allow the top portion of the gun to sway left and right since you are not gripping it..  there is no way to really get a secure grip...

and as far as a bipod goes.. that is a pretty specialized device.. I have one on my 308 AR because I am trying to shoot tiny precise groups from areas where it is not conducive to lug around sand bags or other support systems.. so the bipod is used to stabilize the gun..  with that said I have made plenty of 200+ yard shots with my ar15 (magnified red dot) with nothing more than my backpack as a rest for the gun from prone..

I can not think of a situation where it would be to your advantage to have either on a gun that is typically a "run and gun" type weapon system.. neither is really going to help you in a way that is worth the trade off of extra weight and mess.. the gun excels the most when it is light and fast... every piece of junk you bolt to it reduces that advantage..

Disregard my previous.

Reading is fundamental. I thought this was posted in the AR section.

Take a look a Troy, they are offering a pretty cool AK front end set-up soon.

looks good.. but I bet it gets pretty hot.. I considered the Alpha for my AR and went with something different due to heat concerns..

I don't lime the look of the railed hg out there. But I do see some benefits. How about this one :http://www.impactguns.com/caa-tri-rail-lower-handguard-for-ak4774-lhv47-814716011041.aspx

Looks just like the stock hg. No heatsink but the reviews say its very well made and very heat resisting.

what are the benefits?

So I can be tacticool!!!! :D

I rather have the option to add accessories then not. I need to replace this hg because after 40 rounds it gets so hot you can barley hold it anyway .

I do not recall having that issue with the Kvar offering.. thing was rock solid.. and I dont recall it getting unusually hot..

good railless handguard..

I'm pretty sure the one on there now is a cheap tapco. If it wasn't getting super hot m I'd just keep it. I like the look of it. Just not the burning sensation lol

I'm thinking I might buy the kvar lower hg. Then buy a magpul rail section and drill out the old tapco lower hg I have now. Make that a tacticool lower hg and then have the kvar as my normal unmolested AK hg.
