Vicious 138 Posted May 29, 2014 There are high and low serial number ranges for Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal made 1903 rifles. This does not apply to Remington made 1903 rifles or 1903-A3 rifles, nor Smith Corona 1903-A3s. They discovered that some of the receivers they were manufacturing were not properly heat treated, and changed the process. For SA, the switch happened around the 800,000 mark, and RIA changed at serial number 285,507. 1903s above those serial numbers are considered safe to shoot.
