+2 for Bullethole

Recommended Posts

Was in Bullethole the other day. At the range, gun jammed-needed some disassembly to fix. My fault entirely. Gunsmith and RO stepped up, helped me out, repaired the gun on the spot. No charge. They were kind, polite, friendly and helpful. Great guys and I'll be back to give them repeat business.

This range is an accident waiting to happen. It is usually overcrowded, has no real place to put your stuff, the ventilation system is marginal at best, has no amenities and is erratic in how pleasant anyone is. However, that being said, they are big 2A supporters, and there is no other place to shoot in the area. They have done the best with the limited space they have and do combine firearms sales with the range facility.

Last time I was there I brought my wife's uncle to shoot. We were shooting shotgun and he was on the line. Some of the buckshot sprayed upwards and broke a fluorescent lightbulb. The range officer quickly came by and looked at us like we committed a crime. He got an attitude and told us that we had to pay the range $7 for a new light bulb. I gave him a curious look and said ' well its your range so its your rules' . I wanted to say a couple other things but I held back. Then I said ' do we pay now or pay later?' He told me later so we finished our range session.

On our way out we washed up in the awkward little bathroom located in the hallway b/t the range and gun shop. We had to take turns since its very cramped in there. When I got out of the bathroom I see the range officer harassing my wife's uncle for the money for the light bulb. I stop the conversation and ask what is going on. The uncle says he was in the middle of paying for the light bulb and the range officer abandoned the range to make sure he was doing just that. I looked at the RO and asked him if it was more important to pay for this light bulb or to make sure the range is safe. He told me 'he was just doing his job'. I looked at him and told him that he needs to get his priorities straight. After we paid I told the old lady that we would never go back there again. She gave me an apathetic look and didn't say anything. I was not surprised.

Glad you had a good experience. I have shot there many times and have had ok experiences. Most of the ro's know me so they allow me to do crazy stuff like 'head shots' on the target. Yes, I'm being sarcastic but they are being ridiculous with some of their rules. The light bulb thing put me over the edge to take my money elsewhere. Again, their range so their rules but my money and my choice so I choose not to shoot there.

Thank God a place like Woodland Park opened a few miles away. They actually like their customers at that range and bend over backwards to make sure they have a great shooting experience.

I've been in this place and heard them bad mouthing customers who called or who had just walked out.  Definitely a bit unpleasant as I wasn't a regular.

Also, they got a big shady when I tried to sell an item there.  Probably wouldn't go again unless I was strapped for cash and wanted to shoot for an hour or less.  Certainly wouldn't spend any other money in there.  A couple of them seemed nicer but I'd rather not take my chances.  There are enough unpleasant people in the area without having to deal with rudeness and tension in a room full of guns.

Very much hit or miss at this place. I've had downright excellent experiences and downright unacceptable ones. I've walked in and literally stood around for 15 minutes because no one would acknowledge I was there even though I visibly had a pistol permit in my hand..and that's pretty awkward in a 5'x5' store. Other times I've been treated really good with full attention.

I'll shoot there in a pinch, but for the most part they lost me to woodland park. That's a shame too because I really do love supporting local business at any cost.

The RO was my rifle club coach when I was in high school. He may come off as a grumpy guy but he's a really nice man if you talk to him.

I always get an attitude from the RO their. Can't stand the one prick. I've had him get in my face screaming at me just because I pulled my cell phone out to take a pic of my girl shooting. I was behind her and not bothering anyone. If I could afford the place in woodland id go there in a heart beat. As it is I don't shoot much just because of the assholes there.

Which high school around here had a rifle club?

My H.S. (Xavier) not only had a rifle club and a drill team, but a range in the basement. At 30 W. 16th St. in Manhattan no less.

That was 45 years ago, but they still have the range, etc.

I'm not sure there are any private gun ranges in NJ that aren't family businesses?

What I mean is that the family seems to be the only people working there.

Like I said, I never has an unpleasant experience there.  Just transferred my 7.62 OBR through there three weeks ago or so.  Yes its expensive at $75 a pop but I'd rather give them a few $ extra and drive all the way up there than support a former much closer store who's employees made sexual advances toward my wife.

The RO's seem to know me at this point, one asks where my wife is when I come alone, and in general they have always been nothing but nice to her.  The first time we went shooting, we went to a different range and the RO made her cry.  No Joke!  I didn't this she would ever shoot again.  We went to the Bullet Hole and they were totally nice to her and now she loves shooting.  For that alone I will continue to be a patron.

I had an RO at another range take my rifle out of my friend wife's hands and tell her she is shooting it wrong, proceeded to stand so bladed he may as well have had his back to the target and in general was a douche.  Never such an experience at the Bullet Hole.

Do you guys know if they magnet test ammo. ? I have lead core ammo for my Akm but its comblock so it sticks. Been having issues at my normal range lately.

I have never seen it done.

I've only had good experiences at BH.

Yeah, you don't get VIP treatment at the counter, but that not what I'm there for. I wanna just pay my $11 or whatever it is and shoot.

Though I will share this:

a friend of mine went there with his first handgun, first time shooting. He said as much when he went in and the RO spent about 15 minutes with him waking him through safe operation, getting a proper sight picture, stance, trigger control etc. In other words one on one NRA first steps (minus field strip and cleaning). That's above and beyond in my book.

I've never gotten any attitude from the RO and have even been told it's OK to go over my time as long as no one is waiting, more than once.

I've also never had an issue with head shots. This is from my last time there:

Weekday RO is a solid dude. I've always seen him help new shooters.

The weekends are when things go downhill. Overcrowded and plenty of yahoos with zero experience or training. As such, the ROs get a bit testy. Still, $10 is a fair price for what you get.

Same here.  I was asked for no head shots with an AR, but I rarely shoot my carbine there.  Usually only when I bring new shooters/friends there who have never shot one.

45 rounds from my M&P9 at 7 yards, no one said anything to be about headshots during that string. Not sure why I keep shooting left.  Really pissing me off.

Weekday RO is very solid.  When it's not busy and he sees you know what you're doing he basically leaves you alone.
