GJC88 0 Posted June 14, 2014 Just picked up my first AR today, been waiting 3 months for it to come in. It is a Sig Sauer 516 Patrol (NJ compliant version). It's a piston AR chambered in 5.56/.223, 16 inch barrel with a 1in7 twist and no brake at the moment. Magpul MOE pistol grip, ergo rail covers, ambi mag release and charging handle and stock flip up sights. Unfortunately only came with 1 metal 10rd mag so I plan to order some pinned 15rd magpul mags from the awesome NJGF vendors. Hopefully I can get out to the range tomorrow to shoot it! Old Glock guy 1,127 Posted June 14, 2014 Very nice! Lots of luck with it. Would you mind saying where you got it and about how much you paid?

HKHockey 5 Posted June 15, 2014 Going to get it chopped and have a brake mounted?
GJC88 0 Posted June 15, 2014 Thanks Rob! Not sure yet HK, once I get more proficient and start taking carbine classes where rapid follow up shots are required I'll probably have it done. But for just target practice I'll keep it the way it is. Sent from my LG G2 using tapatalk
GRIZ 3,369 Posted June 15, 2014 I would be happy with that rifle as it is. 5.56 doesn't recoil much and most rifles I've shot with a brake or with compensator didnt really feel that much different. If you use it in competition, you are at the top of the game, and you have a compensator that works well it will cut a little bit of time off a string. One issue many overlook in fitting a compensatory is using it in a low light SD situation. The muzzle flash with a plain muzzle is kind of like an elongated teardrop. A compensator or brake diverts that flash up and to the sides giving that muzzle flash a much wider base. This can be disturbing to many shooters as muzzle blast usually bothers people more than recoil. Of course this is only an issue in low light. AFAIC resale value can also be an issue. I would guess a 516 with a plain barrel would be an easier sell and worth more than one with one with a compensator no matter how good it is.
deerpark 83 Posted June 16, 2014 NICE, especially for your first time out.
GJC88 0 Posted June 17, 2014 Thanks deer park! And thanks Griz, still haven't gotten to shoot it but I have heard that this will make shooting more comfortable for me and the people next to me. Actually like how it looks without a brake and doubt I'll have trouble with the recoil. Thanks for the helpful info! Rob0115 1,105 Posted June 17, 2014 I wouldn't bother with a brake. It's fine the way it is. 5.56 has minimal recoil and non flash hiding brakes just make noise.

supraman1120 0 Posted June 20, 2014 I also recently got a Sig 516 Patrol in black.... I got it for a steal during a memorial day sale ($1100). I had a Yankee Hill Phantom 5C1 Brake/Comp installed as well. With gunsmithing fees (pin/welding the MD, pinning the stock) the entire thing cost me $1185. I also recently added an EOTech 512 and a Vortex VMX-3T 3x Magnifier, as well as the Magpul MOE VFG. I absolutely love this rifle.
GJC88 0 Posted June 20, 2014 Rifle looks awesome supra! Glad you like it I finally shot mine the other day but didn't really take the time to zero the iron sights. Functioned flawlessly though. How much did the optic/magnifier run you? Sent from my LG G2 using tapatalk

Functioned flawlessly though. How much did the optic/magnifier run you? Sent from my LG G2 using tapatalk I got a super deal on the EOTech 512 at a gun show, and paid $325 for it brand new. I paid about retail for the Vortex ($215). Retail value on both is about $700, I got both for $550. I've already got about 900 rounds through it, and has been great. Where do you shoot at? GJC88 0 Posted June 21, 2014 Wow that's an awesome deal. Is the combo on their heavy? Since the rifle is pretty heavy imo, but it is more front heavy, might actually balance it a little. I usually go to RTSP. Sent from my LG G2 using tapatalk

The optic setup is not ideal in terms of bulk and added weight, but it fit my purpose for the rifle perfectly.

supraman1120 0 Posted June 22, 2014 I'd like to know where you got your rifle from, and if you don't mind, how much you paid for the FDE version. I'm PMing you

Shawnmoore81 623 Posted July 27, 2014 I have a 516 patrol also. Great gun. Mine needed 100-200 rounds to break in
GJC88 0 Posted July 27, 2014 I was finally able to take it to the 100 yard range a few weekends ago and it ran well I just wasn't quite able to zero the irons well. But no failures of any kind except when I didn't seat the mag correctly. Love the optics on their shawn that's my next purchase.
