Applied for P2P: Submitted SP-212A - A couple of questions

Recommended Posts

Apparently I am the first individual to use the online form in my town according to the nice records lady at my local PD.  Since I am essentially the guinea pig, is there anything I can do now to "educate" my local PD?  Or, will the be this be the cause for a relatively long wait until I finally cave in and do the paper form and pay in money order?

Does anyone know how the information is transmitted to the PD department using this method?

Thanks!

It was very quick for me. Then again, my local PD (the admin who handles the paperwork) knew about it.  As long as  you gave the correct Municipal ID to the State, and the correct receipt # to the local PD, the SB212A results should be returned directly to them. The results returned would have to match the receipt # for the correct applicant. My last round was done that way and took only 16 calendar days, start to finish. I'm not sure if the results/info are "pushed" to the PD or if they have to "pull" them from the State (I assume "pushed").

I was the guinea pig for my township PD. The officer in charge called the NJSP and they walked him through it with my application. The benefit was that I had my permits in nine days. You may want to suggest to your PD that they call the NJSP.

Based on what I read, it appears to be the case that information is "pushed" to them.  Where the information gets pushed to, that's where I still have no idea.

I will most likely stop by one of these days and let them know to call the NJSP

I am hoping when i put in for more this speeds up the process. My town now uses the eform

That was my primary intent in going blindly into this process.  That, and I wanted documentation on my end information had been submitted to the state in a timely manner.

Has anyone read through the new instructions as of late?  I can't believe I didn't read the updated instructions when I recently applied for 4 p2p.

It appears the SBI is no longer taking paper 212a forms effective April 2014?

Can anyone confirm this?

Hey, just read that PDF referenced above and found and interesting item on page three under "212A Licensing"

At the bottom of the page, item 6 states that the old card must be surrendered when a new application is filed.  WTF????

It take the NJSP six months around here to issue anything so no card if I move, it's lost , mutilated, want a re-issue, etc!  THAT SUCKS!

Correct me if I am reading this wrong!

I also read that. First off I think it only applies to replacement cards.   It would put you up the creek until you received the replacement.  You would not be able to purchase Ammo or long guns in NJ.

Since you must go to the local PD to complete the process I would think that the Firearms Unit might have a different opinion since it doesn't make sense.  Of course if you lost it or your wallet went over the side while fishing then you could not turn in the old one.  I am not suggesting you lie, but that could happen.  They might make you swear that you really lost it and boy if they found out otherwise you'll be sharing a cell with James OutofOrder Kaleda.  Good Luck.

...item 6 states that the old card must be surrendered when a new application is filed....

You are reading it right, but keep in mind these are directions, not laws, and as such the PD that does the intake may or may not require you to surrender your old card. Up to their discretion.

If you are among the unfortunates that have to use an NJSP barracks, chances are pretty good they will require you to surrender the old card. Not sure where a refusal to do so would get you - almost seems to me that to surrender the old card would be an "added requirement" in the application process. LOL.

It has been being phased in. Not sure that all PD's are on board with it yet.

Thanks for the clarification.  Sorry to bug you, but here's a hypothetical situation.  In speaking with one's local PD, they indicate  they do not know how to do the online form/system.  They further give the indication the old paper 212a will need to be processed which will delay the process. However, when speaking with the state police unit handling the online checks, a unit member states and confirms the local pd is online with the new system.

How would one go about pursuing the matter with the local pd?

Your local PD received a letter explaining the new program. Dollars to donuts, it's sitting on the chief's desk and no personnel have been trained. That is essentially what happened in my case, but I was lucky enough to have a pro-active detective take it upon himself to figure things out on his own.

I would approach the officer that does the firearm processing and suggest to him he contact the NJSP Firearms Unit and have them walk him through it.

Good luck.
