In need of rust removal by a gunsmith

Recommended Posts

My neighbor has a Remington 5 mm rimfire magnum rifle, needless to say it looks like it would be fun to shoot. However my neighbor is older and does not have internet access. So I figured id see if anyone knows a gunsmith that can remove the rust ad re-blue the barrel if necessary. I am not certain if the inside of the barrel is rusted but I know the outside is.

Still consider myself a noon but I would assume a bore snake, decent cleaning, and a few rounds would clean up the inside barrel. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thin surface rust, yes.  Deep pitting, no.

To the OP, if it is just surface rust, naval jelly or the like will take care of it.

If it's rusted on the outside, it most likely is on the inside.  Go at it and clean it as best you can.  It ain't gettin' any better the way it is.  I have seen firearms brought back from the "dead" to be half way decent shooters.   Many with clean "dark" bores.  Chamber could be the biggest problem in getting in clean.  I would clean it up and test it first, If OK, then I would think about some lipstick.
