Saw bear cub on my way home tonight,

Recommended Posts

I was coming home tonight from playing cards with some friends, and there was a bear cub walking in the road near Neshanic on Pleasant Run Rd just before South Branch Rd. It was cute little bugger. I didn't see momma around or anything else. When I inched closer he/she walked into the grass.

A week ago, there was a warning from our PD to our property manager. Sightings of two adults and two cubs right on the property grounds, in front of someone's unit, and near the recycling center (where many people walk there dogs and play Frisbee, etc.). Residents were warned to bring outdoor "bird feeders" indoors and keep them there. The PD would not respond to bear calls at places where they see an outdoor bird feeder.  Also, all the dumpsters have to stay closed and the gates around them shut (but not locked).

And yes, I have pictures:

Where I live bears are always around. I hope they intrude into the deepest anti bear hunt enclaves. Im against extermination but after the hunt we get some relief from the bears constant presence. They are great to see once in a while. It sucks when everything you do outside requires that you be alert for them. Specially when it comes to dogs under 100lbs. There have been 2 dog kills on my street in recent years.

Well, that was my concern in re: the sighting near our recycling center. There's a long tract back there were dog owners let their dogs run and play Frisbee, etc.

Have had bears on and off for years now.  Mostly medium size, with the occasional large size.  This year we have seen a quite a few smaller ones on a regular basis.  I have one that is constantly around the chicken coup.  Tried introducing myself, but he's not interested, good.  Earlier this year had a very large one try to get into a house about a mile from me. Peeled back to garage door to try to get the garbage in the attached garage.  DFGW set up a trap, caught it, but then said it was not the one the did the damage.  Friends of mine just lost two coups of 25 chickens to a large one about 2 miles from me on the other side of the valley.  With heavy cover from all the rain very hard to see or hear them before they are too close for comfort.

The dog is the best warning device.  I swear she can smell them before she sees them. They (bears) really need to be culled a little better than they are, their numbers seem to be increasing a little to fast for me.  Guess this year I will have to try to limit out during hunting season.  Never in my wildest dreams would I believe I would be hunting bear in NJ.

We live in sparta and see them all the time. Some times with cubs but lately it has been a 500+ lb big boy. He walks through our yards occasionally but doesnt bother anyone.

My parents live in montague and they have lots of bears too. They have been there 10 years and never had an issue.

And showed him your pickinic basket, "Hey Booboo!"

I saw bear road kill for the first time last year in Pottsville. Right in the middle of town.

Was it the bear or the person? I CNT imagine hitting a bear can be very beneficial to ones vehicle

I live in Hopatcong if you want to see bears in NJ bring some beers and come sit on my back deck for a few hours. They really come when I grill steaks. Theres a 400lb+ in my backyard on a regular basis. A few different sows and cubs come around on occasion as well. I usually employ methods of discouragement when I discover them. They still come back.

Ive been in VT the past week but according to my lake buddies they haven't spotted the snake yet. I don't often hang out on that side of Brady bridge except late night Mason St. runs. I'm sure if my friends spot the snake it will be quickly assaulted by drunks with many empty beer bottles lol... if I'm taking the boat out its for hybrid fishing at night or drinking purposes in Byram bay with our obnoxious 40+ boat tie up during daylight hours.

I have to know the lake level height before even attempting going under Brady Bridge and then its real close, like 2-4" most times.  Hang out in Byram Cove alot but I hear someone is bitching about it over there.

The yacht club website has a real time water level gauge, here's the link http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nj/nwis/uv?01455400

I have a Sutphen bridges aren't a problem for me luckily. My boat sits about 8" off the water.

We know all about the guy in the cove starting problems. This is his first summer here, he is from New York. Amazingly the float I'm usually in has migrated directly in front of his house, and my stereo got an extra amp and another 10" sub this summer. Encouragement to remove bikini tops during our floats has also become more prevalent. Must be coincidence lol... he wont be there much longer.

Sorry we side tracked the bear thread Mark.
