need some help

Recommended Posts

ironically I did not build this particular gun from parts (and its the only one I am having issue with)

the gun previously worked and I have not made any changes since it worked..

took mag catch apart and everything looks OK in that regard..

I just cleaned the important parts, and I guess I will take it back out and try it on Thursday.. the mag catch appears to be working much more fluidly now.. maybe it was just dirty and was just getting hung up some how.. hopefully..

If it's similar to AR you should be able to hold BCG way, WAY back by charging handle (or remove it) then reach into ejection port and push empty mag follower up and down with your finger to see how it interacts with BHO and where it might be binding.

I guess you ruled out short stroking since it doesn't engage when you rack it by hand.

Check out the thread I started when I decided I wanted to purchase an AR:

http://njgunforums.com/forum/index.php/topic/64490-good-entry-level-off-the-shelf-buy/page-10#entry896636

I ended up building the lower and purchasing complete upper. If I can do it ANYONE can. Next build I'll prob build the upper as well.

If you need a comp/brake check out Wheaton Arms. I'm pretty impressed with it.

Good luck and if you have questions feel free to ask.

I am familiar with the thread.. I posted in it back in December 2013.. I was one of the people that told you to build your own.. lol I have built several ARs and am plenty familiar with the process.. This gun is an unusual situation as it was available to purchase at such a good deal at the time that I bit the bullet and purchased it complete..

I dont need a brake... I am just having an issue with a gun that I have not had issues with in the past..

it was actually not functioning all that smoothly.. so I am hoping the cleaning maybe resolved it..

dpms 308

federal xm80cl

149gr FMJ

factory mag and Pmag

fires fine, loads next round

does not lock bolt back on last round (bolt catch seams kind of tough to lock up)

when manually cycled on empty mag same situation

Good luck and if you have questions feel free to ask.

why is my bolt not locking back..

LOL....I posted to wrong thread.Meant to respond to "1st Build.....Nees Some Help". Was posting on phone and was hanging so I copied & pasted it once phone refreshed to your "Need Help" thread.

You try giving it a good "WHACK" on the side? Sorry but that's all the help I can provide..... Good luck.

OK so my frustration is increasing slightly..

went to the range today with everything as it was and even tried ammo that previously worked but noticed something new.. on failure to lock the bolt back I took a look inside and I noticed that the follower on the mag looked like it was getting hung up... so as silly as this sounds I put a little bit of oil on the walls of the mag.. and shot several more rounds before running out of ammo.. and I was unable to get the mag to stick again.. typically I would just say "bad mag" and toss it.. but this happened on more than one mag..

does this help anyone help me..

It may be a compound problem, more than one thing going wrong at the same time.  If it holds open when you manually operate the bolt release (with no mag in the well) then I'd look for weak springs or deformation and wearing on the magazines.  I'm sure you've already tried smacking it home.  If they used to work, something that was marginally functional has worn down or out.  It could just be gunk in the release assembly too.  Just throwing out some guesses and maybe it will turn on a light.  Good luck.

I appreciate the feedback it is so frustrating because the gun shoots so well.. I really need to pin down this issue...

I took the bolt catch apart all looks good..

I am just trying to visualize what would cause a follower to tilt.. because it is happening with more than one mag...

The gun is an off the shelf DPMS? Have you checked the buffer for any strange marks on the front of it likes it's jumping the detent? Do all the spring coils look ok?

If the mag is empty and you pull the bolt open is it noticeably difficult? Once you've done that does it hold open?

Check it again.

Without touching mag release, if you pull charging handle to the rear with mag in place will BCG lock open? Try that with multiple mags just as you have tried with live ammo. Otherwise it is short stroking. You have experimented enough with live ammo, do the same with no ammo.

Do you have different TYPES of mags? Perhaps metal vs. PMAGs? My guess is something is slightly out of spec. Follower presentation and/or mag spring strength may or may not help. I would consider replacing BCG release and spring.

Then things get down and dirty.

Buy an extra BCG release spring and trim some coils from yours so it doesn't require as much force from the follower to activate the BCG stop.

If magwell is out of spec, and you can't find mags that will work, last resort is to modify the mag stop and mag catch in the mag to get a v. sl. higher mag presentation. Obviously that is a balancing act with feeding and BCG clearance.
