remixer 1,645 Posted July 24, 2014 Anyone here ever do a conversion to Propane or the tri fuel systems? Do they harm the Engines in the long run? Are there special treatments when running the engines on fuel they were not designed to run on?
RUTGERS95 890 Posted July 24, 2014 I have and it's absolutely fine, won't harm the engine at all. We can talk about it when I stop by for my pieces, probably tomorrow as I got tied up this week.
Worn_Holster 2 Posted July 24, 2014 Propane or natural gas are actually a better fuels since you don't have to worry about the carb getting fouled up with old fuel if it is not used for a while.
M1152 713 Posted July 24, 2014 I did my a just before Super storm Sandy. The only things required is you slightly close the gap up on the spark plug and a run standard motor oil with a low ash content. Synthetic oil is NOT recommended. I use Castrol. The only other suggestion is that the system should be broken in on gasoline before doing the conversion, this is what I was told. I know someone else who converted theirs right out of the box so that's your call. Some may argue you lose some horse power running on NG (or propane) but I don’t see it, it runs nicely @ 3600 rpm. I dumped all the gasoline out of mine so I don’t have to be concerned about it getting gummed up.

Unfortunately, where I live, it would have to be a conversion to "methane" and connected to the main gas line. Bottled gas is against fire safety regs in a multiple unit dwelling (like a townhouse). Bottled gas is against fire safety regs in a multiple unit dwelling (like a townhouse). Thats not unfortunate at all, actually better IMO. Natural gas if available where you live is usually less expensive and unlimited compared to LP. Sooner or later the bottle will be empty. Running a new branch of gas pipe to your generator is a piece of cake, well for me it is lol. If they ever bring natural gas to my street the next day my front curb will have a pile of oil fired and electric appliances piled up for trash. And I'd consider it, if I knew I'd be staying another 10+ years or so....

brucin 923 Posted July 27, 2014 I have a question for you guys that have done the conversion to propane. Approximately how long will a standard BBQ tank run the generator? I have one fridge and want to run lights and my charger to keep the marine batteries charged for my inverter. I have no access to natural gas so propane is my only option other than gasoline. T Bill 649 Posted July 27, 2014 20LB tank holds just over 4 gallons of gas. Biggest problem is regulator "freeze up" which is an icing condition caused by drawing to fast on the tank. Propane does not flow well in freezing conditions. Twin tanks may work better. Can be done with a simple "t" connection before regulator.
