Suggestions on a K98

Hey All,

We unearthed...un-closeted lol should I say a k98 in our house. Seemed to have been lost for a decade or so in my dad's place. His uncle gave it to him. Seems to be a amateur sporter job from the 60s. All numbers match and no electro penciling.

I'm at a loss at what I should do. A scope has been mounted and sights have been hacked off. There is some rust and pitting but steel wool has been helping and the barrel is like a mirror (inside)!

My question are really should I clean and mount it back to this stock. Which seems to be a hack job. I was thinking I should I buy a repro wood or synthetic stock and just clean it up a bit. I think it's too chopped up to be brought back to original specs which I'm not so sold on doing.

Anyone have any info on this model and suggestions on what path I should take with it?

is the receiver drilled? if not a number matching k98 action is worth a decent $

I'll drop the wool. I actually only did some where the wood hides it so I hope I'm good. I'm trying to get pictures up but it's cumbersome to say the least. Here are some links:

Did I mention there was electrical tape holding the barrel on? Also it looks like it's been once over on the finish side already!

I would use it in its current configuration. Everyone wants to return sporterized military rifles to their former glory. You can easily spend $1000 to create a $600 rifle.

 

Have someone look at it to determine what it needs to shoot if you can't.

I definitely like the keeping the sporter aspect of this rifle but I'm not sold on the current stock. Anyone see any harm in dropping this in a Hogue over molded synthetic or Brownell's wooden like the ones below:

Anyone know if this is a short action or standard action?

 

Also should I leave the current finish or reblue professionally?

well the damage has been done so have fun with it . Me I would keep it as is because its your dads gun .

I hear that. Pops never shot it or really even cRed for it for whatever reason. Literally inherited it then left in a closet until now.

I'd take it to a smith and have the chamber checked, and have the bore measured. When it was sporterized, there could have been a caliber conversion done. Wouldn't want you to load 8mm Mauser up, shoot it, only to have something blow up on you. 

 

As far as getting a new stock, thats up to you. Once you get it checked over, I'd shoot it a couple of times and see what you would change on it.
