I lost mine about a year ago. They required a police report filed and then it was just a matter of submitting a new form and waiting for the duplicate to come in. I took advantage of my time there to put in for 3 p2p's just so I got something extra out of the process.

Regarding having a copy; I understand the convenience of still being able to show it to buy pistol ammo, cover possession of long guns, etc. However, I believe you would still be required to report the loss to the police as there may be someone out there using it illegally. Wouldn't that prompt the police to wonder why you didn't want to apply for a replacement?

Better to not lose it in the first place. There are several documents I am required to have on my person daily which are not easy nor legal to duplicate. I therefore take care to make sure I don't lose them.

Is there such a law?

What are they going to use it for? Buying ammo?

I misremembered a little but you must apply for a duplicate card within 30 days of losing your FPID.

NJAC 13:54-1.11 Duplicate firearms purchaser identification card

(a) Persons shall apply for a duplicate firearms purchaser identification card to replace lost, stolen or mutilated card, or in case of a change of residence by the holder, within 30 days of such loss, theft, mutilation, or change of residence.

Ah, OK, I didn't know that part included lost FPID. Interestingly, there seems to be no penalty for non-compliance nor does it state the FPID becomes invalid or revoked if you do not comply. But to stay in the good graces of our NJ Masters it would seem that compliance is advised.

Lol my fist FID card was hand written by the town. They couldn't afford a typewriter I guess.

Don't feel bad, the card stock mine was typed on was yellowed from age. It felt like a scene from Nazi Germany sitting and watching the LEO use that 1930's/1940's typewriter on my card. I thought damn, PVC ID cards are cheap and easy to print why hasn't NJ started usuing them?

I tell everyone I know that's gets a FPID - GO AND GET IT LAMINATED! - I have mine cut down a bit and laminated to fit in my wallet without folding/bending the card.
