Online Multistate CCW course?

Recommended Posts

Looks like half-scam (or, saying politely, misrepresentation of certain facts).

Utah, as far as I remember, requires actual *in-person* training by Utah-certified instructor. If this website sends certificates saying that you passed a course without actually conducting this training with you present there, that might be a ground at least for revocation of this instructor's status by Utah BCI.

I am also fairly sure that at least some of the states have "live fire" requirement.

I also think that getting Texas CHL requires having a course physically in Texas (at least there were discussions around that here after we lost PA with UT permits).

That said, I am very skeptical about this "training". My skepticism goes through the roof when I see that they sell their services through groupon...

It does not mean this certificate would necessarily not work for you thought.

EDIT - I wrote complete BS above. :maninlove:

Apparently they offer a course to get AZ permit.

Looking at AZ PDS website, particularly requirements to get a permit, I see the following

N. An applicant shall demonstrate competence with a firearm through any of the following:

1. Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class that is available to the general public, that is offered by a law enforcement agency, a junior college, a college or a private or public institution, academy, organization or firearms training school and that is approved by the department of public safety or that uses instructors who are certified by the national rifle association.

2. Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Arizona game and fish department or a similar agency of another state.

3. Completion of any national rifle association firearms safety or training course.

4. Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class that is offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies or other divisions or subdivisions of law enforcement or security enforcement and that is approved by the department of public safety.

5. Evidence of current military service or proof of honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions from the United States armed forces.

6. A valid current or expired concealed weapon, firearm or handgun permit or license that is issued by another state or a political subdivision of another state and that has a training or testing requirement for initial issuance.

7. Completion of any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualification to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties.

8. Completion of any other firearms safety or training course or class that is conducted by a department of public safety approved or national rifle association certified firearms instructor.

So, in other words, if you took literally ANY firearm course (even non-NRA endorsed, just if instructor is NRA certified) (1,8) and/or if you went through Hunter Education in NJ (2) and / or if you took NRA First Steps or similar course (3) and/or if you have pretty much any other permit (FL, UT etc.), then you don't need any other courses to get AZ permit...

That's at least how I see it.

Don't bash it yet.   Many states don't require any training.    I took an online course just like this one for my AZ and VA.  This was before PA dropped those 2 states.I think I paid $35 to watch an hour video about guns by some guy who was an NRA approved instructor.  It was not an NRA approved class.  I answered a 10 question on-line quiz and printed my certificates of completion.

The course was useless but I didn't want a course, I wanted a ccw and those two states accepted my money, fingerprints, and the certificate of completion.

The only difficult part was convincing the local trooper barracks to dust off the old ink fingerprinting equipment and help me roll my fingerprints (one state required that a LEO do the prints, I did the other at home with an ink pad.)   But I have to say, my local troopers were great.  They had a hard time finding anyone who still knew how to do ink prints and had to get some rubbing alcohol out of the medicine cabinet to soften up the old ink but they did help me get them done and were definitely not opposed to civilian carry.

Why bother? It limits your options. The Utah course gets you Utah and qualifies you for a bunch of others. NRA FIRST steps can get you Florida and others.

Because I've been shooting handguns for 30+ years and have shot tens of thousands of rounds through dozens of handguns.   My shooting has been curtailed severely in the last couple of years due to the cost of ammo but I have my own small range in my back yard and have shot at least a couple times a week for many years.   I wasn't interested in taking a basic pistol course.

What I wanted was a carry permit and at the time VA and AZ were good in PA and everywhere else.   The cost was $35 and I was able to do it in my own home, on my schedule, cheap.    It fit my needs.   I realize that it doesn't fit everyone's needs.

Don't waste your money. There are so many better options in NJ with real instructors. You might even learn a thing or two.

Agreed. I know I either relearn or learn something every time I go to instruction. And I've been doing it several times a year for 20 years. Plus, many states require some sort of in person instruction. Perhaps states you haven't thought of but will think of later. These guys aren't charging more than a couple days of range fees.

You guys think reciprocity goes away. It doesn't. It changes. It's changed for years. I lost Ohio on AZ a couple years ago. I got it back on AZ. Talk to the old timers, they will tell you they keep their old permits because things change.

For me training is about new perspectives and it is also fun. I enjoy training on the range and even in a classroom (eg MAG 20). You learn so much from people who have not only trained but have real world experience. For example, GFH has bill fearon from NJSP teaching classes now.
