Avoid: R & R Gunsmiths - Somers Point/Ocean City

Recommended Posts

This place was great when the previous owner had it, changed ownership about a year ago and things have gone down hill.

Current owner (Joe) has a attitude problem when it comes to transfers or anything not purchased from him, the gun smithing work is nothing special and is below average (another local I know who is a LEO had the same negative experience with this shop)....

Back around December/January I called asking about AR's and told him I was looking for a Colt Target Match (one of the few NJ compliant Colt AR rifles) and found one myself on Bud's, Bud's wouldn't ship it to NJ since it had a 20 or 30 rd mag and wouldn't pull the mag from the box so I asked Joe if he could find one and for what price.

I get a call back that the Target Match is XXXX amount from his supplier (Bud's, go figure), I told him to give me a day to think it over (this was over a grand) and called him back the next day and asked if he would take a credit card, told me no so I said okay let me see if I can free up some cash by selling something else and I'll call you back IF I can afford to proceed with the transaction.

Well, this guy takes the cake for being a hot headed pushy shop owner...I ended up getting barraged with calls the same day from him swearing at me and saying "If you want the ******* rifle call me the **** back I need to know by the end of the ******* day", after listening to 3 voice mails like this (all left minutes apart from each other) I called him back and flat out told him I did not want the rifle, simple.

Nope, nothing is simple with Joe at R & R, instead he accused me of wasting his time....really? I was about to purchase a rifle from his establishment and he originally agreed with me about giving me a day to think it over and free up some funds for it (remember, no credit cards and no deal/promise was made).

This guy is on a power trip...or on a trip from something else, I called today and asked about transfers rates (I purchased two SKS rifles from Classic Firearms and a Mosin)...he says "after you ****** me over the transfer cost is $145 per gun. REALLY? I "****** him over" how? I asked him what he meant and to explain:

"I see you re-sell guns on gunbroker after you buy them" to which I replied "so what?" he replies "You are ******* using me to make money!" and it mushroomed into a dispute, finally he said he would do the transfer as a "favor", no I do not need "favors".

Yes, I sell firearms from time to time on gunbroker when I'm done with them and want to buy something else. I DO NOT sell for a profit and usually take a loss.

I called the BATFE and they said no law prohibits me from selling some of my collection as a non FFL (as I enjoy buying something, shooting it a bit and moving on to something else).

I'm taking my business elsewhere, this guy is crude, rude, pushy and arrogant.

If you feel like verbal abuse and exuberant prices, here you go:

R & R Gunsmiths

Why even engage in these conversations? As soon as it's apparent the other guy isn't going to be reasonable, I'm off the phone. Life is too short to worry about what the guy on the other end of the phone thinks.

This. If someone is being a dick when asking for MY money, it won't get very far.

TJ Sporting Arms in Lacey is awesome as well.

Cool, never used them before but I'll put them in my book for go-to FFL's, I've used Whittaker Arms and Legend Firearms (long drive, but Ira is a great guy!) now I have a 3rd FFL to put down on my list for go-to guys.

Thanks guys! :D

I had called R & R because there was once a good guy named Dick who did the gunsmithing there. I don't know what happened to him but someone was a big grouch on the phone with me. He literally said "What do you want?" right off the bat. What do I want? How about a "hello, company name" instead of "what do you want". I asked if Dick was available and he said NO. I told him "thanks anyway..."

If you do need gunsmithing service, we do just about everything and have a full-time guy. P&K Firearms, 63 E Bay Ave Manahawkin NJ 08050. GSP exit 63.

Dick would be Richard, he sold it to a guy named Joe (that's prob. who you spoke to) and it went down hill. Sad, it was a nice little shop that did great work just a few blocks from me until it changed ownership.

Thanks for the info, if I need work done of a rifle or shotgun I'll give P&K a call :)

Buds and guys like this are made for each other. Once a deal goes south, looks to shop elsewhere. No point in going back. I met amazing and friendly FFLs here. May be its NJ state making their life hell or may be its just attitude, but some FFLs feel like they are doing you a favor and get ticked off if you sell your firearms.

Just look for someone else, there are some really good ones on the forum vendor list.

My previous comments posted here were for the previous owner of R&R, Richard. I gave the new owner, Joe, a chance, and I have been satisfied with my experience there.

Called there a few months ago to ask if they had, or could order, a shotgun I was looking for.  I figured since I pass the place 5 or 6 times a week, I should give them a try. The guy couldn't have been more of a jerk to me.

The minute I told him I wanted a $450 shotgun, instead of something $1200 and up, he basically told me to stop wasting his time.  He said I couldn't know anything about quality guns if I was looking to buy something that cheap.

For the record, the shotgun I asked for was the one I really wanted, not just the one I was settling for because I didn't have the money for something "better" (i.e. more expensive).

I found a forum vendor who was awesome to deal with, and have had nothing but good experiences. Even a couple of guys on here that I haven't bought anything from have been really helpful, even though they didn't have anything to gain from it.

Who needs A-Holes like R&R, when there are plenty of good guys out there who want your business?

Typical R&R

That's how you lose business, you wanted a $450 shotgun that fit your needs not his needs and since it wasn't something high end he basically tells you to stop wasting his time...wow

Wow

X2 - for a lot of guys out there, a $450 shotgun IS a "high end" shotgun.

Very short-sighted on R&R's part.  He let an opportunity to establish & cultivate a loyal customer walk out the door.

I went in there about a year ago looking to get repairs on a 1906 I inherited and Richard told me it was a piece of crap and not worth repairing. I told him the history of the gun, how it was my dads when he was a kid and I was willing to pay whatever it took to get it shooting again. He and the guy behind the counter (Joe??) started in on me about what a POS that guy was and not worth fixing.

I never went back and never will.

I use Jim @ Whittaker Arms for purchases

That's screwed up, the gun might not be worth a lot (money) but it was your dads and you want to keep it and get it fixed.

If someone told me that I would be ready to bitch slap them so hard they would need cosmetic surgery to fix their face.

I left in amazement that a business owner (like myself) would treat any customer like that, then I remembered I am living in NJ and that seems to be the norm... With the economy as bad as it is, casinos closing left and right, he should be kissing the feet of anyone walking in the door in the hopes of selling anything

+1

I am a business owner as well, and I have no clue how they stay in business.

They might not abide by federal law...one time they had two 1911 pistols (US Mil issue) in good shape for sale, I asked if I could pay for it on the spot and have them hold it until I received a PP (I offered to pay whatever he wanted to hold them).

He says 'why don't you just get someone over 21 with a permit to buy it for you?' I thought he was joking, he wasn't...

We all know an FFL can hold a firearm for someone but telling someone to do a straw purchase is pretty dumb.

Oh, and talking about full auto conversions with customers? The guy is asking for trouble and if you look for trouble you will find it...

I bought my first pistol from a local FFL.  I'm sure he didn't make much on it, but I think he made up on it on the next 8 guns between me and a few friends within the next year.  Not going to retire rich, but I'm sure it helps to keep the lights on.
