GSSF Match in Topton, PA this weekend (Aug 16-17). Anyone going?

Recommended Posts

It's always the Glock m, 5 to Glock and the plates. The 5 to Glock at this match was the first time I shot this version.

I enjoy the Glock match. It's something different and it's about people having fun. I watched a young kid shoot in the Open division today and he was awesome. Maybe he's 12.

After reading the follow up posts , I don't think I'll be checking a match out anytime soon. Everybody in my house was feeling better on Sunday so I went to Somerset IDPA. We had a good handful of new shooters and they had a nice introduction to shooting sports. Everybody there was really nice ( even Howard) and patient . If it is mostly novices at the GSSF matches I would tend to agree their time is better spent checking out local IDPA/USPSA matches .

Though GSSF is friendly to novice shooters, there are a lot of VERY good competitive shooters there.

It's a totally different format than IDPA / USPSA. You should try it. It will either be humbling or  you'll go home with a new pistol.

I think it's unfair to say "novices" would be best served by IDPA / USPSA.

It's not mostly novices but it caters to people who are novices. There are quite a few master's that shoot the match. There are guys running plate rack in 2 seconds. That's fast. I hit my personal best at 3.12 yesterday. Although I didn't shoot well on the first stage and likely won't fair well in the field.

It's a different atmosphere then idpa/ ipsc. You either like it or not. I saw quite a few ipsc guys yesterday while there.

Well, there is that. No doubt about it. There are quite a few guys who shoot multiple divisions. I shot in sub and civilian in NJ and PA. Next year I'll be adding heavy metal and heavy metal sub.

Ouch, that hurts :)

Hey, if a call is close I will usually give the benefit of the doubt to the shooter, EXCEPT if it is a safety issue.  You break the 180, sweep anyone or fire a shot when you don't intent to then you are gone for the day - no way I want unsafe actions taking place and the only way to prevent them are to DQ people so they learn.

That said there is nothing wrong with the Glock matches, they can be fun.  The issue I have is that for us Northern NJ people they involve a lot of travel time and a lot of wait time for three stationary stages where you don't draw from a holster and you don't do any reloads on the clock.  They are much more exciting that just converting money into noise at the range, but I find them very boring compared to action matches.

For a new shooter that does not have a holster or is not confident about using one there are other matches that are fun in the area.  There is static steel matches, knockdown steel matches and even some matches the only use .22 guns.  I would urge all shooters that have not done these to give them a try, they will greatly improve your shooting abilities and are a lot of fun.

I think it's fun. It's very different then ipsc : idpa. I like the people and enjoy myself. I don't go in with any expectations so I enjoy it.

I won $175 from the Jackson match, so I'm cool with that. Hopefully I can cash on this match.

Not underestimating , just stating that new/novice shooters get a lot of individual attention at smaller local matches. It just sounds like too much waiting around for too little shooting for my taste.

I'm with you Sandy!  I have friends that go every year.  But the waiting-around isn't for me either!  One of my concerns as a Match Director is wait time.  That's why we keep things moving nicely along and separate most slots so you're NOT shooting back-to-back Relays, because of the additional prep time factor.  Deliberately over-booking a Match and making folks wait all day isn't in my nature and I might (read WOULD!) eventually say something to piss somebody off!

If it comes down to a gun raffle, get 100 tickets sold at a club meeting and various leagues, and w/o firing a shot people can win guns........

Sorry to hear of the Puke-tastic start to the weekend.  Between the Puke and the Skunks you sure have yer hands FULL, lol!
