Current mag cap law? cliffs notes please

Recommended Posts

What is the CURRENT NJ magazine capacity law as of today?  I'm not interesting in any pending bills.  I want to know what officially penned and passed NJ gun law can put us in jail today.

Pistol?

Rifle?

Thanks.

15 RD for rifle/pistol

Shotguns are odd with semi-auto's being restricted to 6 (ish).

But, you really shouldn't ask for cliff notes for something that can land you in jail, you should want to know every single detail and read the law yourself, anything else is irresponsible or foolish.

... unless you're hunting with that shotgun.   :hunter:

Yes!  I just took that course and got my license.  NJ Law is 6+1 (6 in tube, 1 in chamber) for semi-auto shot guns.  But NJ Fish & Wildlife policy is 2+1 when hunting or shooting on WMA ranges, etc. The chamber needs to be "blocked" to prevent more than two shells being loaded into the chamber.

That's Federal law for waterfowl as well ... that's why some shotguns come with the mag plug already installed.

very simple.

Thanks Steve for answering question asked...nothing additional.

NJ and gun laws = never simple.

See e.g.

Semi auto applies to all mag limits. Bolt action/lever has no limit right?

Unless you are hunting geese in some years and some seasons, in which case there is no shotgun capacity limit imposed by hunting regs (but the NJ state one still applies). I'm waiting for someone with a 20 shot pump gun tube :)

Note the 6+1 capacity this year for geese (7 total)

Hence Vald G's advice below:

At the end of the day, to quote NJ State Appelate Court Judge David Baime:

"When dealing with guns, the citizen acts at his peril."

Thats only for the early September conservation resident goose season Sep15 to 30th. After that the plug has to go back in the gun for the rest of waterfowl season.

I was wondering what that plug was in my 12 gauge. I took it out so I can fit more. Silly piece of plastic trying to make me load more often.

Mine had a tree branch with the bark milled off and cut to length. Straight from the factory. It was even bowed like most tree branches.

OK - I'll pile on.

@mipafox - Don't need to have the gun, possession of a mag exceeding 15 rounds is all that's needed.

Pump guns are affected if the magazine used fits a semi-auto also. Remington 7600 comes to mind - they made one in .223 that would accept AR mags.

It's never simple.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Just stick an unsharpened pencil in the mag tube. I have an old 500 thats had a pencil in it for two decades. Works perfect.

We don't have any snow geese up here or I would do that season myself.
