S&W M&P22 Compact !

Just got back from my first gunshow in Florida and I am happy to say I have a new S&W M&P22 Compact... it's pretty cool!

 

It was the ONLY ONE in the entire place.  Once we saw it, it almost was bought on the spot, but I figured, lets take a minute, cool down ,think about it, and see if it's cheaper elsewhere.  I started to realize , it shouldn't even be out yet!  ALmost every vendor said, "Wait isn't that the brand new one?  It's not out yet!" and when we told them, "Yes it is, someone else has one" I got a few mutters of "Yeah ... right.." to "Well why are you asking me for it then??" to 'Wow!!!  Where?!!?  I want to go get it!!!"

 

Got it from an awesome family business, I literally just got in (The gunshow as in Orlando, about a ~90 mile, 1.5 hour trip) and got it broken down and cleaned, so I can't remember the name.  The husband, wife, daughter, and daughters significant other ( i didn't ask lol) were great, they have a shop like 10 mins from where the place was, they apparently do a brisk business with S&W and signed up for receiving a new product without knowing what it is, so they got it during the week and I got it at the show.  Was born on 7/29, you cannot get guns newer than that if you try unless you're plumb lucky.

 

 

So far so great, it's great in the hands, as some may know I also just recently got a M&P Shield so I am pretty happy with the ergonomics, it's bigger than the Shield but not quite a "full size M&P" ... two 10-round mags, it's a single-action internal hammer, ambi-safety... and a nice pic rail up front.

 

This is basically the PERFECT critter gun and great for tucking in the waist for protection on the property.  And of course I'm sure it will be a blast just plinking and even shooting with the M&P 15-22.

Congratulations. How does it feel to be on the cutting edge?

 

My wife has the full size, and we both enjoy shooting it. The only thing I noted after she bought it was that the internals are quite different from all the other M&Ps. And I'm not just referring to being rim fire. It's fine, but for my part I would have liked it more if its manual of arms was like the others.

Yes it is very different ... it has a fixed barrel... I am surprised by that, or at least was surprised shall I say.  I personally have wanted a Walther PPK/S .22LR for a while, which is supposed to be the same thing as a regular Walther PPK but just in .22LR... same with the Colt 1911 .22LR i have also looked at heavily ( the FDE Rail Gun version, which is like the Marine M45A1 but not a $2000 .45 ), 90% same or something like that, so I take your point.  And I am sure your sarcasm of being on the cutting edge is a little bit deserved, but sure, come on, it's nice to have something brand new that I am sure not many others have yet, I mean I know it's not an HK416, but in my smallest corner of the world, it's cool and fun.

 

I couldn't get out to shoot tonight, as it was already getting dark before I even got it cleaned and sat down to have dinner, but soon enough, I suspect it will be fine but we shall see.  In the interim I snapped a few poor quality pics, just to show it in real life as opposed to advertising pics.

 

Great gun- and a pretty great price  OH YEAH, I forgot, until December, every one purchased will get a free box of Winchester M22 222rds sent to them if you send them the form.

I haven't live fired it yet, so I can't give you real-time info, and I have only dry-fired it a few times (Due to several reasons- one, obviously it is not good to dry-fire a rimfire firearm and I certainly don't want to bust up my new gun; but also ,it has a magazine disconnect safety so it's a pain to even dry-fire it purposely, you need to insert an empty mag.  (I don't really keep empty mags lol.)

 

However it's designed to be just like the trigger of the newest M&Ps.. like my new Shield has the newest trigger out of the M&P lineup, it has an audible and tactile reset (which apparently was a big feature request from M&P owners) and they have a newer, crisper trigger pull that is advertised at 6.5lb - they were going to put the newer Shield trigger into all the M&Ps (I am not up on the M&P "generations" so this is the extent of my knowledge on the subject) - but apparently this M&P22 Compact, which is made in house by S&W and not by Walther ,is designed to have a trigger feel very similar to those M&Ps (as close as can be with a rimfire and internal hammer vs striker-fired centerfire cartridges.)

 

I've got tons of good .22LR, I should be able to put it through its paces when I get a chance and report back.

I am guessing it will be pretty much similar to the M&P22 only with a shorter barrel and adjustable rear sights (from the look of it).  Wonder if the mags are interchangeable...

Scrap: FYI I wasn't being sarcastic. Sorry if I implied that. That's one problem with BBs, no inflection or tone.

 

Anyway, I meant that it must be fun 'discovering' a gun you (and I!) didn't know about when you walked in. Never happened to me. I checked S&W website after your post, and there it is.

 

I found the takedown on the M&P 22 to be a little tricky. Took some time before reassembling it came somewhat naturally.

45D, hey no probs brother I didn't mean anything either, I just worried I sounded a little too much like a showoff kid with a new Nintendo tape.  Although that would not be too far from the truth sometimes lol.

 

Hopefully I am going over to my property to shoot it soon.  I can't really do much as I haven't yet setup a proper target system & backstop (Out of the ~30 acres, only ~2/2.5 are 'cleared' as of yet, and we have just started staking out where the house will be, and while way down the road we are planning on building a REAL range, in the interim we are planning on building a good but only semi-permanent backstop but that has yet to happen.)  - I have one mag loaded w/ CCI SV 40gr RN, the other with Federal AutoMatch 40gr RN, and I hope to also test out some MiniMags and/or CCI Stingers/Velocitators or some of the real premium CCIs I have tucked away (The type of stuff I'd leave loaded in the mags for emergencies or critters etc.)  I don't think I'll be able to put 500 rds down the pipe but I will have a bit of a better report later, I hope.

 

Thanks again- Those that are interested, definitely get your permits and talk to remixer etc. because they're pretty cool and by all accounts great little guns for a good price.  And I think the fact that they're actual S&W will make them really popular and sought after vs. Umarex's and such.

So I busted some caps earlier in the day- actually high noon, in the sweltering Florida sun and heat actually.  Good news is, the M&P aspects work great- my land is a sandy, wooden area of pine trees forest w/ sandy dirt.  Between sweating and the sand the gun got gunked the heck up and worked great.

 

Started with 11 rounds of Federal AutoMatch I had had in a mixed bottle of ammo- perfect function and straight accuracy.  11 more rounds of CCI Standard Velocity- same result, perhaps straighter accuracy.  Switched to a box of 550 Federal Value Pack 36gr HP ammo- we probably put somewhere between 150 and 200 rounds of this through the gun.

 

Accuracy was fine, function was fine.  We probably had a handful of failures to feed, failures to eject etc.  I honestly believe it could have been a few things- the gun was brand spanking new, it needs a bit of breaking in.  It  ONLY had a problem with that ammo... I put a few more mags of different ammo through after the Federal Bulk- including CCI Mini Mags HP (loved them), CCI Standard Velocity (ate them like chicken chow mein) and some more AutoMatch, never a problem.  Just a few problems with the Bulk Pack, which again I attribute to being a new gun  and even possibly gunk in the gun,  I had cleaned it and used some Hoppe's Oil Wipes on it, they leave A LOT of oil on the gun- and that just makes gunk of rimfire residue.

 

 

All and all I am psyched, it was a TON of fun, I killed some cans , the exit wounds of a Diet Coke can hit by a 36gr HP .22LR is hilarious.  Rapid fire w/ 10 round mags was as fast as you can pull the trigger... and all the CCI ammo was deadly accurate.

 

Plus I failed to mention, it has a threaded barrel- and with my ears ringing from failure to bring any ear protection, and now living in FL, I could really see the benefits of a suppressor for it!!
