Kaiser7 33 Posted August 30, 2014 Title pretty much sums up my question, what's the best +2 extension for a Remington 870, specifically which is the best value. I've read good stuff about Vang, but is it worth the $25 more than the Wilson Combat? Also, my girlfriend just joined the Rifle club at her college, and mentioned they apparently shoot a lot of clays there. I think I'm going to try and join her sometime, but I know she doesn't have much upper body strength. She can barely lift my wingmaster with a 18.5"barrel, and I'm not sure how she'll fair with a shotgun set up for sporting clays that will have a longer barrel. Come to think of it, what is a good barrel length for shooting clays?
T Bill 649 Posted August 30, 2014 I use Nordic Tactical aftermarket parts. Very pleased with fit, finish, and practicality. The MXT magazine extension, follower, and barrel clamp all work perfectly. Why only +2? Pumps are not subject to round restriction, except when hunting (2+1). Are we talking about and 18" HD setup? Sporting Clays are best shot with 30" barrels. Some use 28" or 32" Trap shooters use 30", sometimes see 32"-34". Barrel weight vs length is usually not that much. Balance is key. A longer length will stop 'squirrely' movement. OK, I see 18.5" barrel length in your post, so +2 is right. I use a +3 on one gun because the extension sticks out about one inch longer than the barrel. With careful spring trimming, gives me and additional two rounds over the +2 for +4.
555R 0 Posted August 30, 2014 Factory Remington plus
Scrap 4 Posted August 31, 2014 Factory Remington plus 2 Yup I have the factory Remington +2 extension on my custom 870 Tactical ... comes that way from the factory and has been flawless since. I did buy the Wilson Combat heavy duty tactical spring and follower which I guess helps reliability and ensures proper function with loads from heavy 00 Buck to birdshot, who knows how much it ACTUALLY does. I bought the 870 Tactical to make it a project and convert it to an 870 Tactical Magpul Police - however, one thing I didn't realize at the time was the factory 870 Tactical Magpul actually has a six round magazine, not an 870 receiver (4+1) and +2 magazine extension. It's a 6-shot tube w/ a cap. (Plus they Cerakote it. I probably would have bought that version but it came out just after I bought my 870.). I will say this: I recently (for Father's Day) had occasion to buy an excellent Nordic Components +2 for a Benelli SuperNova Tactical. It is much "nicer" than either the Remington factory or my Choate for the M930SPX. It's nicer, and on a Benelli that is pretty damned nice already, you notice it, but otherwise, how "nice" does a shotgun magazine extension need to look? Especially on (at least MINE) 870 Express models, which have ridiculously terrible finishes anyway... and if I ever get around to paying for a nice refinish job, it would include that extension anyway. I would go with the factory, especially if the price was any significance less.
Kaiser7 33 Posted September 1, 2014 My shotgun is primarily a HD gun, but I figure that since swapping barrels is so easy, I'll just get a longer barrel for sporting purposes. I built a wingmaster for $270, and even though it's made from cobbled together parts, it feels amazingly sturdy and robust, so I think it would be a nice sport gun as well. I want to be able to put a sling on it, which is why I've been looking at extensions that have a sling mount, or at least take a clamp that has a sling mount. I don't care too much on the aesthetics since the finish on my shotgun is really bad (It was an old stripped receiver I bought it from, I might take it to backwoods for cerakoting just so it doesn't look too bad, and protect it from rust), but I don't want the extension to stick out past the barrel. But other than that, I don't really care how the extension looks, since they all pretty much look the same anyway. I mean, if someone made an extension that was a rod with two rounded parts at the end, I might not buy that one, but otherwise I don't care.More than anything, I'm surprised there's really a difference in performance in any of them. I would have thought all the extensions would be the same, with only the springs and followers really doing the "heavy duty work". I even contemplated just looking for a pipe that was the right diameter, and threading it myself, and just buying a replacement spring and follower, but I don't think I have access to a threader. High Exposure 5,635 Posted September 1, 2014 I have a +2 & a +1 from Wison/Scattergun and a Vang Comp +2. Both are well made and have been reliable. One of the guns at work has the Remington factory +2, it is also solid.
Jon 264 Posted September 1, 2014 I run the Remington +3 and have been very pleased with it. I would expect Remington's +2 to have the same level of quality.

Damn, that is beautiful, what furniture is that? Or did you stain it yourself? My furniture is blond, really light colored wood, and while I like it, that's just beautiful. Worn_Holster 2 Posted September 3, 2014 I use a +3 Remington extension that came on my 870 model #25077 on my HD shotgun.
Kaiser7 33 Posted September 3, 2014 It's factory express furniture dyed with a walnut finish. I have factory wingmaster furniture, think I could do the same thing? I REALLY like the look of that. What finish did you use (I see Walnut, but any more info, brand or whatever). Also, how did you finish it?
