What kind of shotgun ammo do you stock?

Recommended Posts

Title says it all. I currently have two boxes of el cheapo 00 buck and am going to buy more. I'm curious to see if people stock more el cheapo shells or more premium HD/target loads.

As for "stocking", I'm thinking of what you guys have for home defense, SHTF, and target shooting needs.

most if not all my shotgun ammo is geared towards what I hunt. I use 1buck for deer so I have a bunch of that. I have 3" turkey loads in #5 shot. and I have 2 3/4" high brass #6s for rabbit and pheasant.

all the above would work on 2 legged critters. lol

Since my shotgun has a 28" barrel, won't do me much good in a HD/SD scenario; I use it for clays.

That being said, I stock mostly target loads. Remington Gun Clubs in #7-1/2 or #8 or Winchester Super Targets if I can't get the former.

Also have some slugs for fun at the range, but mostly just target loads.

I buy whatever is cheap from good manufacturers. I really like Sellier & Bellot, shells shoot great and their hulls are clear so it's cool seeing buckshot pellets in them. I like stocking up on the Rio buckshot and slugs, SG usually has their cases for like $130 and it shoots well.

I stopped into Sarco today for ammo to introduce my wife & daughter to the 12 ga. They carry "minishells". About 1/2 the length of regular shells with, supposedly, much less recoil. We'll see tomorrow. I bought a box (of 20) 00 buckshot to try out. A little pricier ($21) than I usually go for but if it works for them, I'll buy more.

Are they generally picky?

Not picky as far as feeding and extracting. But I put about 20 buckshot loads through each one at set distances to determine patterning. I wanted a 3-4" pattern at 7 yards and it turned out that each gun preferred a different load. My FIL's 20" 590 prefers Hornady TAP to the Federal that my 18.5" 590A1 prefers.

I don't hunt. I don't shoot trap. My shotgun is strictly a social gun - as such, my round selection reflects that. Also, I would prefer to use an AR than a shotgun so I don't keep up with the shotgun as much as I should, beyond familiarity enough to instruct and qualify my people.

Anyway, I have a bunch of Hornady TAP 00B (8 pellet) and Federal FC 00B (8 pellet) and a random selection if slugs and I have a bunch of Winchester Ranger as training ammo. The work 870s (14" barrel) prefer the TAP, my gauge (18" ported Vang Comp Barrel) prefers the Fed stuff.

I really want to get some Federal #1 B now that they make it in a Flite Control model as well - I hear it's the Bee's Knees.

Also, whatever you decide to use make sure you pattern it in your gauge at the distances you plan on using it for the purpose you selected the ammo for. Know what your shotgun can and, more importantly, can not do.

I almost bought some of that from Cabela's last month - their store brand (herter's) had short 12 gauge 00 buck (6 pellet) for cheap.  Let us know how they do...

EDIT - As for the other question...loads on-hand usually include several cases of 7 1/2's or 8's, some small-game loads in #6 or 4, a bunch of 00 buck, and 1 oz slugs

Fired the 00 mini shells at EFGA today...put all 4 pellets in the chest at ~50 feet. Tried a head shot and hit 3 out of 4 in the face. Fired from the hip and got the same results. The wife tried a few and figures it's something she could handle if she needs it. She wasn't willing to try the big boy shells though after watching me fire a couple. One thing about them, I had to remember to tilt the gun slightly to the right when cycling or the short casing (1-1/2") wouldn't fully eject.

This signature is AWESOME!!!

I usually have almost a case of trap loads for the (very) occasional trap shooting and just general blowing stuff up.

I've got about 10 rounds of low recoil buck and I'm expecting delivery today of an order of 100 rds of Herter's SD 00 buck and 20 rounds of Herter's SD combo (.65 ball and 4-00buck in each shell).

I have miscellaneous target loads, maybe a box or two of slugs, and two boxes of Hornady Zombie Max. Same as TAP but in a fancy box. Same price too.

I have a MEC loader for shells, but I need to start using it.

I'm actually a sucker for gimmick ammo. I buy the Federal Pink Breast Cancer awareness as well as the red/white/blue Federal stuff when I get a chance. Those are target loads.
