Chewed Up Charging Handle

Recommended Posts

I shot my Adams Arms piston upper for the first time last week and only ran about 100 rounds through it due to an issue with the handguard.  When cleaning for the first time today i had metal shavings in the upper and on the BCG.  It looks like it's coming from the charging handle and where it hooks on to the side of the upper is all chewed up looking.  Does this indicate an action issue (carrier tilt?), or is it just a shitty CH?  The CH came with the upper, i don't know the maker.

Pictures, please?

Yes.

Do you mean the place where the latch keeps the charging handle in place? That sounds like a weird place for wear.

Are you sling shotting to chamber a round or using the bolt release?

If it was a DI gun, I would say it is a crappy charging handle - probably out of spec and using crappy aluminum and advise to replace it. But since it is a piston gun - which apparantly never fail and have a mandatory life expectancy of parts approaching infinity rounds, I have to say that it must have been designed to be like that. Don't sweat it, and trust the piston.

Please stop cluttering the thread with DI vs piston babble.  I have a DI AR too and there's plenty of other threads debating them.

thanks. That was my assumption too, but i don't claim to be anything close to an expert. I've wanted a raptor anyway so maybe it's time.

It does just look like a cheap CH. If there are no burrs or wear on the upper id take the opportunity to buy a bcm or raptor (my fave) charging handle.

I concur it is a probably a cheap charging handle. Replace it.

However, I would still call Adams Arms and say "wtf people?"

Also, don't buy charging handles for looks, buy them for function. That Fortis charging handle may or may not work, I have no idea, but it sure was machined for looks.

You are right. I apologize for cluttering your thread.

I was feeling a little froggy after the recent piston AR thread.

In any event, do what Vlad said. Contact AA, ask them "WTF?" Then go buy a quality charging handle. I personally prefer the BCM gunfighter mod 4 (medium latch).

I emailed them last night, I'll see what they say. I'm still looking into the Fortis, but everything i read so far is really positive. I don't know Fortis to make junk in general.

No problem. Thanks, still deciding which way to go.

I still don't know how that handle you had got that worn. You always push the ch closed before you hit the bolt release right? I can't believe its getting that chewed up just from pushing it closed relatively easily.

Yes. That was my original concern; could something with the action of the BCG be not normal and putting extra stress on the CH.

Not that I can think of to induce wear in that spot. The carrier "slides" along the underside of the ch but it really shouldnt touch. If bent the ch would show lots of wear on either side of the ch. I can see that part getting f'ed up if you're releasing the bcg with the handle pulled out. I mean it has to be really crappy metal.
