Target Practice in Forest

Recommended Posts

Are you in the US already? I thought this site blocked access from outside the US............

I have an M44 and a M38 in stock at this time. 91/30's can be ordered easily.

Nope, will be at the end of this month. Not on a proxy or anything, direct line in Sweden, so guessing that it is not blocked.

I will be applying for FPID then, assuming I don't run into any bureaucratical problems seeing as my green card won't arrive until probably a month later. Hopefully I'll be able to convince the police department that my stamped and endorsed visa will suffice as evidence of residency, as it is supposed to do.

I was just checking if there's a chance to find them in NJ without having to order and do the whole FFL-thing, also I'm not so keen on cleaning cosmoline off the rifle, I figured that local stores might have them pre-cleaned.

Maybe I'll come see you once I have my FPID in order, thanks for the information!

I'm guessing those 440-round tin cans of surplus ammunition are the cheapest alternative, do you need to do FFL if I were to order the ammunition from, say, Classic Firearms? Or perhaps you have them in stock?

Kind regards

Your endorsed visa is proof of residency status. It doesnt prove where your residence is. For proving where you reside you need to show a drivers license to the police or a state issued ID. Plus for the FID application you need your Alien Nr. Green card should arrive 2 weeks after you re processed at point of entry.

For the FID application you ll also need your Social Security Nr.

Good to know, hopefully it shouldn't take too long to get my SSN since i applied for it through the visa, though I understand the government is absolutely incompetent in sharing information within its own agencies. Do any of you happen to know how long it takes to get a non-drivers ID in NJ? Takes about 3-5 days after applying to get your ID here.

Is there a reason you just wouldn't get a driver's license?

Both Drivers License and Non Driver ID you can get in one day provided you satisfy the requirements.

Go to NJMVC page and see what they are: http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/

-You ll need a Social Security Nr for both. So that s the key here.

My wife also applied at the time her immigrant visa was issued and it arrived in 10 days.

When you are processed after arrival (the DHS officer will escort you to the back room) ask them when should you expect the Social Sec nr.

.......and if you don't know already this .pdf download it, it will answer many questions for you.

If you have a Swedish Drivers License you have to pass the Theory test only, no driving. And you can use your Swedish license for one year. But if you don't get an NJ one after one year use of your Swedish then you have to pass driving as well. Get an international drivers license as the NJ Cops don't really know how a Swedish one looks like. If you don't drive then forget all the above.

From my early days here the best advice i can give you is to get wheels and fast as soon as you can. You ll need them.

For the FID application fingerprinting you ll have to schedule an appointment and that will take 10-14days wait from time you call.

The state has outsourced the fingerprinting to Morphotrack and you need to get this done.

Dont apply for an FID in Long Branch, apply when you rent/buy your place in Somerset. The FID. Address and the NJ identity document address have to match at most/all dealers.

Many thanks for your information. Very helpful. It is nice to see that the gun community is welcoming and warm, despite what others would have you believe.

I don't know how to drive, and by extension do not have a Swedish drivers license. Public transport is very extensive here, so there's never really been a need to have a car.

I will be learning and eventually getting a drivers license in NJ as soon as I can, but it will take a while so having a non-drivers ID as proof of residence in NJ during that time would probably be good.

I don't know how to drive

I'm sorry!  It's so necessary here outside the major metropolitan areas that it's unusual to find someone who doesn't know how to drive.  In most suburban and rural areas in the US it's almost a rite of passage where many get their license as soon as possible.

I think getting DL shud be ur 1st priority ... before anything else ... how were u planning to get to the range otherwise ?

Plus practically it will be VERY difficult for you to get around or get anything done here without a car ...

Range 14 info and economics.

200 yard (182 meter) high power rifle range

50 yard pistol and rimfire rifle

$60 annual membership

Additional hourly range fee $4/hr per person

The pluses.  If you shoot infrequently and go alone, R14 is a bargain.  R14 is pretty well regulated, no BS going on there.  The minuses, if you go to the range once a week or more, and bring a friend each trip it becomes quite costly.  About 1/3 of the time the range is cold, they call an 8-10 minute cease fire about every 20 minutes.  Range is only open Wed (1300hrs to 2000hrs), Fri (1300hrs to 2000hrs (Apr-Dec only) , Sat and Sun (0800hrs to 1600hrs)

I usually go six times each year, bringing a friend half the time and shoot for three hours.  My annual cost is about $168

Solo, once a week for eight months, two hours each trip.  Annual membership $60 + $256 hourly fees = $316 annual cost

Same as above but bring a friend $60 + $512 = $572

R-14's $4/hr range fees may seem cheap but if you shoot a lot, it adds up fast.

I have to disagree with that one. I see people on a daily basis who have no clue what they are doing behind the wheel. It doesnt stop them from getting on the road though. Comical and scary at the same time.

Basedop-

If you want to get anywhere in NJ, you will need to learn how to drive. :)

2nd, you will need a vehicle to transport any firearm you have. I would not recommend taking a Mosin on the transit line.

3rd, once you are here, go to any gun show in PA. Two of them are the Philadelphia National Guard Armory and the big one (Oaks, PA) will have plenty of Mosin rifles to purchase. Oaks was just this past weekend. There were Mosin's (NIB) new-in-box and plenty of used ones.

4th, plenty of us are members of Range 14. Let one of use know and we could guest you in.

A DL should without question be your number one priority.  Its nearly impossible to do anything in NJ without the ability to drive. If you were in New York City, I can see not owning a car, but here in the suburbs, you are screwed.  There is some public transportation, but it is usually limited to routes leading to and from larger cities, Newark, Jersey City, Trenton and NYC. There is no way you can get to Range 14 without a car, unless one of us drives you. lol

The game code in NJ specifically says you cannot just walk into the woods to target practice. If your caught unless you have a hunting license and are in the woods with a firearm during the prescribed season that allows such a firearm for that specific hunting season, you could be charged with poaching. This is the reason fish and wildlife provide ranges throughout the state for the purpose of target practice, open to anyone that possess a valid hunting license. When you get here I suggest signing up for a free Hunter education class. Acquire your NJ firearms hunting license, and take advantage of the free state ranges for target practice. The only suck part is the state rifle ranges only allow rim fire, shotgun with slugs, black powder & Air rifles. They also have clay and archery ranges as well.

Hello friends,

I will be moving from Europe to the U.S., specifically NJ, soon. I'd like to exercise my adopted second amendment rights and acquire a firearm.

Goodness gracious. I suddenly have the song, "My recruiter told me a lie" playing in my head. Oh well, I won't shatter the illusion for the guy.

Basedop, check your windage before you move again.
