david8613 69 Posted September 19, 2014 looking to pick up a new extended handguard for my 18" tavor, I'm checking out one from manticore arms and one from midwest industries. One has keymod and one does not. Is keymod worth getting?
n4p226r 105 Posted September 20, 2014 What is the purpose of getting the extra length? Keymod just for the sake of keymod doesn't make sense. Do you plan to add a light? Does it look like a more natural shape to you?
david8613 69 Posted September 20, 2014 My purpose is mostly to have more room with a longer hand guard, and maybe added rail space, both products seem really nice I'm just stuck on the fence which system might be better in the long run. From what I understand the arc light system works with magpul m-lok and another I can't remember the name, that's why I'm kind of leaning towards manticore, plus it's one piece design, has more slots vs midwest is a 2 piece design, less slots, but midwest is slightly longer. Tactical Monkey 51 Posted September 20, 2014 Do not overlook Gear Head Works "TMF". While it does not extend the length of the foregrip, it can accept a 1" diameter light and has cut-outs for tape switches, as well as it will take various bolt on rails. Having the light at an integrated 6 o'clock position frees up rail space that could be used for other goodies. The only concern is the 12 o'clock shadow created from the muzzle device. I think it's the best design out there, but that's also because I don't own a single piece of key mod gear. If I already had a ton of keymod accessories that might change my opinion. They are hard to find in-stock but he is always making more. http://shop.gearheadworks.com/product.sc?productId=9&categoryId=
Tactical Monkey 51 Posted September 20, 2014 Just re-read and noticed you have the 18" Tavor. In that case, the "TMF" is not as good of an option. They do make a Scout version designed around the 18", but the options for mountable lights are limited and it casts an even greater shadow from the barrel and muzzlebrake. Sorry I missed that detail on the first pass.
david8613 69 Posted September 20, 2014 I still can't decide, I'm starting to like the midwest version for the cleaner looking end cap, manticore end cap doesn't look as nice. Both are really nice units. Gearhead works had been working on one but had to go back to the drawing board since it was very similar to what is on the market already, he told me he is working on a new one but it will some time before it becomes available. It's tough to decision to make they both have very good options.
SgtToadette 59 Posted September 21, 2014 I started a thread about rail panels which turned into a good discussion about keymod in general. Take a look and decide for yourself. I'm partial to keymod. http://njgunforums.com/forum/index.php/topic/64235-keymod-rail-panels/
david8613 69 Posted September 23, 2014 Thanks for the link, it was a good read. I ended up going with manticore xtl, the reasons are that I can attach accessories like rails from arclight, magpul, and impact weapons. it's a one piece monolithic design less screws. Attachments are non directional you could reverse things, were keymod is only goes in one direction. Manticore's system has lugs which to me might help better against stuff getting lose in recoil. Lastly I like how uniform and clean it looks, keymod holes looks a little out of place to me on a rifle. i also like Manticore's internal light switch very slick...
