Online Ammo Sales Question

Recommended Posts

I have a friend (really it's not me) who just was granted his FID and permits. He is going to purchase a 22 and was shocked that he couldn't find any 22 locally. I told him to order online but he would prob have to scan & email a copy of his FID and DL.

He works in online security and is very apprehensive about sharing his personal data. I think he may be okay with scanning & emailing a copy of his FID but he is pretty set against scanning a picture ID.

Are there any online ammo sellers that will ship here with only a copy of FID without a copy of DL? He's not trying to circumvent any laws, he's just very careful about his personal data.

Driving to PA or all around is mostly out b/c he works mostly out of state. He flies out Sunday night/Monday morning and gets back Friday night/Saturday morning. Currently he's working in TX....he must hate having to fly back to the PRNJ every time!

I'll prob just end up ordering ammo and splitting it with him if he is dead set against scanning his DL.

What about him buying .22lr in TX and shipping it to himself. UPS with an ORM-D sticker on it and he's GTG. It's how Freedom Munitions ships their stuff. Also he could fly back with it as well. I'm not up on how the airlines handle that but it's do-able; hell you can fly WITH ammo loaded in magazines!

Reading that, I'd start working out if there's room inside his checked bag for a locking ammo can. Otherwise maybe a Pelican (knockoff?) case with lots of locking points.

granted 11# isn't a lot, but that should be at least a box or 2 (500rnds) of .22lr per trip. If he's flying once a week he could get a pretty decent stash built up here.

I've never been asked for a scan of my DL when buying ammo on line, a number of places didn't even ask for the FID.  The last place I got .22 I think was Cabela's, and they didn't ask for a DL.  If he can find some 22 at a decent price tell him to order it, see if they ask for the DL.  Order someplace else if they do.

Your friend will not have any trouble buying 22lr ammo on-line.  Some on-line retailers, and even some LGSs will want to see the FID.  For instance Palmetto State Armory will ship .22lr to NJ but you have to e-mail them a copy of the FID.  Others recognize that 22LR is NOT a handgun specific round and will ship with no requirements other than just paying for it.  Midway USA and Gander Mtn are two NJ friendly retailers.

There is a list of NJ friendly ammo retailers here on the forum, I cannot find the link but it's here somewhere.

Gander Mountain? Either you're thinking of someone else or something has changed. When I tried in April, they won't ship handgun ammo to NJ, FID or not.

edit: I see Gander doens't consider .22lr to be handgun, so fine for OP's purpose

I don't own handguns so I can't say for sure who's friendly or not.  It's just some retailers consider 22lr as handgun ammo and are a pain in the arse. I was VERY surprised when I bought a box of 22lr at CMO last weekend and they logged it as HG ammo.  I will not order .22lr from Palmetto because they cannot correctly interpret  NJ handgun ammo laws.  It's the principle.  I still order long gun ammo from them when it's on sale.  I may have my principles but I'm not so strong headed as to be stupid enough to turn down a good deal.  PSA is still my go to source for AR parts too.

If someone knows where that list of NJ friendly ammo web retailers is please post the link.  I still can't find it.

Yep, that's the one.  duuuuh, why didn't I think to look in ammo & reloading.  I used the forum search feature and the marvelous engine here turned up everything but.

Thanks.

MidwayUsa, Cabelas, Natchezz, etc. all ship to NJ and none require FID to purchase ammo. Gander will not ship ammo to NJ.

All out of state firearms purchase require shipping to ffl dealer. You will need to provide the dealer's license, not your friend's.

He should ask the PD in his town to explain the process.

If he finds a private nj seller, they just fill out the permit and he provides his FID and license as proof.

If your friend is too paranoid to provide his id for a gun purchase, perhaps he should not buy one.
