big five 1 Posted October 7, 2014 I am planning on buying new sights for my glock 17. I have been looking at big dots and ghost ring sights(snake eyes) and Dawson sights.. I would love a oversized fiber optic front sight . I'm thinking a over sized front sight with a ghost ring rear would be great. I am planning competing alot more in 2015. What are most ipda guys using and why? I would like a red dot in the future too.
Howard 538 Posted October 7, 2014 Well I have Trijicon HD on my Glock G35 and absolutely hate them. Sure you can see them well but the big front dot is just way too big. At 15 yards it more than covers a six inch steel plate making it very hard to figure out where to aim. On my G34 I have Dawson fiber optics and love them. I have a very thin red fiber on the front and the adjustable competition black on the back that has two green fiber optic dots on it.
ronhonda 86 Posted October 7, 2014 I have Dawson sights plain target rear, fiber front. Best setup for me, identical to 2 others hg's I have. Ghost ring sights are for timmies and rifles. Edit; Warren tactical and Heine make great glock sights as well.
Mr.Stu 1,918 Posted October 7, 2014 I use a .105 FO front with a .135 plain black rear from Dawson on my G35. (I have a .100 on my XD-45 tac) My eyes are still pretty good with corrective lenses so I can see it fine. The narrow front sight makes long shots easier as it does not obscure the target like a big dot does. The fairly wide rear makes finding the front sight easy without being too wide so it becomes hard to center. Bear in mind that you won't just be shooting at 18" wide cardboard targets, you'll come across pepper poppers at up to 20-25 yards and they are only 8" at their widest. ronhonda 86 Posted October 7, 2014 Also if you cut a larger piece of fiber, you can have a larger dot.

ronhonda 86 Posted October 7, 2014 How?The smaller the fiber you cut the smaller the dot. If you cut a bigger piece, the more you burn/melt into a dot.
Vlad G 345 Posted October 7, 2014 Narrow fiber with clean black rear sight is pretty much the answer. You can experiment with front sight width to rear sight opening ratio's to find something that makes you happy, but stay away from rear dots/fiber/ghost/whatever. Mr.Stu 1,918 Posted October 7, 2014 The smaller the fiber you cut the smaller the dot. If you cut a bigger piece, the more you burn/melt into a dot. I would suggest that you don't make the fiber wider than the metal of the front post. For longer, precision shots you should be using the edges of the front sight as if there was no fiber at all, just like traditional black on black sights. The fiber is for finding the front sight quickly and for up to 10 yards on a regular target you can almost ignore the rear sight. NYMetsFan86 9 Posted October 7, 2014 In IDPA, if you are shooting SSP, I dont believe you can have a ghost ring site. .....Irons are GTG
Greg 12 Posted October 7, 2014 Ghost ring sights are not allowed in any IDPA division Under section 8.1.7."Non-IDPA-Legal Modifications for All Divisions" 8.1.7.4.Sights of non-standard configuration (ghost rings, Bo-Mar ribs, etc.). I use Warren Tactical rear and FO fronts on my G34 and a factory STI adjustable rear and FO front on my 1911

BullzeyeNJ 104 Posted October 8, 2014 I dont compete but I shoot alot and I like the U notch of the 10-8 rear sight. Pick your poison for the front sight...Some like fiber optic, some like brass or gold bead.

Vlad G 345 Posted October 8, 2014 Then why not use stock sights because factory Glock sights look nothing like that ?
FLHX 1 Posted October 8, 2014 I have used a few types of FO front sights. I started with Sevigny .115 wide by 245" tall front sight with a .150 wide rear all black on my G34. The POA/POI was high but I made due. I then changed to the Dawson Comp sights .115: wide .215 high and that made the G34 right on with POA/POI. I have since put them on all my comp Glocks. I have read a lot about people having the pistols POA/POI right on with the .245" fronts but you have to try it. If you go with the Dawsons they will swap them out until you have the proper pair you like. I think the perfect combo for my eyes and pistols were FO dia .060 x .115w x .220" tall fronts with a .245 or .250 rears with the widest available rear notch. Good luck and keep trying until you get them right!!
acaixguard 37 Posted October 8, 2014 10-8 .140 width U-notch rear with their .115 front fiber optic (red) gives an awesome quick sight picture. This is my latest setup, and don't think I will go back to tritium anytime soon.
High Velocity 0 Posted October 9, 2014 If your considering something like the Dawson or Warren setup be sure to also check out the plain rear / Fiber optic front combo from Taran Tactical Innovations. http://tarantacticalinnovations.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=44_51
RS1200XL 4 Posted October 9, 2014 Warren tactical black rear, front F.O.
raz-0 1,259 Posted October 10, 2014 warren tactical u notch rear, or bomar style with truncated corners on the rear. In general nothing with a forward slope, and no serrations unless the rear sight is straight up and down. Thin fiber up fornt on a post jsut slightly narrower than the rear notch.
