Gun Buyback "Meetup"?

Recommended Posts

ummm.... I would have told the cop to suck my hairy left nut about demanding to see ID of any kind. It's constitutional (federal and state) that they can't demand ID unless RAS of a crime being committed. Standing there looking at shit is NOT a crime.

Well they looked decent but I didn't get a good look at what they were exactly....

Yeah you put up an attitude when there's cops around - just begging to get a ticket or arrested for loitering or soliciting.  They treated us with respect so we respected them back just fine.  Even chit chatted a bit.

thank goodness you had the sense to leave when you did or they prob wouldve jacked you up on jaywalking too! No disrespect to you guys and good for trying but I find it funny that these past few years, all the talk about going to the buybacks and finding hidden treasure, whats legal to do and how to go about it and boom!- they threaten you with loitering and solicitation. Now we know.

It's funny because gun buy backs themselves are illegal as per Nj law.

No ID, no COE, no pistol permits, no FFL. Totally illegal. But you show up to legally purchase and get hassled. Only in NJ.

Maybe the next one they have we should all March around the building holding up signs with the law written on them. Protesting the illegality of these buybacks.

Or hell we should hold our own buy back if they can do it why cant we?

Nobody folds around here. It would just encourage their nonsense. The reason cops won't detain you or ticket you for not answering their questions around here is because they tried that crap a few rare times 10-15 years ago and got sued. Not because people rolled over and chit chatted a bit.

And violating your rights is not a sign of respect. The next victim has you to thank.

Residents may anonymously turn in a maximum of three firearms and receive cash payments of up to $250 per weapon.

If they want guns "off the street" why do they put a max of 3 guns on it? :D That seems kind of funny.

Were they accepting BB guns? I still want to find one that pays above retail for BB guns. It seems like those sorta died off.

would love to have the press show up with that take and start asking questions.  I'd bet it would be funny to watch the police officers face when trying to answer to the legality of it.

AMNESTY TAKES GUNS OFF STREETS

Union County collects nearly 500 firearms

SUZANNE RUSSELL @SRUSSELLMYCJ UNION COUNTY — A total of 480 guns were collected in a Union County gun buyback program Saturday at churches in Linden and Plainfield.

The guns included six assault weapons, 57 sawed-off shotguns, a U.S. Army-issued gun and some with possible historical significance, including a handgun dating to World War II and two World War II-era rifles — including one believed to be a German infantry sniper rifle. Six of the guns collected had been reported stolen from states such as California, Washington and Virginia.

About 220 guns were collected in Linden and about 240 in Plainfield, officials said.

Standing before the large display of the recovered weapons, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park said she was “extremely pleased” with the results of the program.

The program was a collaborative effort of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, Union County Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Department of Public Safety, Union County Board of Freeholders, Linden and Plainfield police departments and Morning Star Community Christian Center in Linden and Vision of God Family Worship Center in Plainfield.

Both churches had a line of people before the program opened for the day.

“We collected 480 firearms on Saturday and all the agencies spent about $43,000 in an effort to get guns off the street,” Park said.

Office were used to pay for the guns.

Buyback one of first by a single county

Park said the state Attorney General’s Office has organized about 10 gun buyback programs in various locations since 2012 and collected about 16,000 firearms. “This is one of the state’s first gun buybacks planned and hosted solely by an individual county,” Park said, adding that payment of up to $250 was offered for each gun turned in. “The program was a no-questionsasked, amnesty-based initiative. No personal identification information was required to turn in a firearm or collect payment.” All the collected weapons were checked and then brought to the Ralph Froehlich Union County Public Safety Building in Westfield where Park, joined by Acting Union County Sheriff Joseph Cryan, Union County Freeholder Chairman Christopher Hudak, Union County Police Chief Daniel Vaniska, Linden Police Capt. James Sarnicki and Plainfield Public Safety Director Carl Riley held a news conference. Capt. James Russo from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office helped coordinate the program.

In a few weeks, most of the weapons will be destroyed, and a few will be added to a county museum.

This is the second time in two years Union County has participated in the program. Last year, more than 1,000 guns were collected when the program too place at churches in Elizabeth, Linden and Plainfield over two days. This year’s collection was a one-day event.

Avoiding potential tragedy

“It is our sincere belief that any one of the firearms collected over the weekend could have carried the potential to contribute to a tragedy that was prevented by taking these guns off the street. A suicide, a fatal shooting, a child finding a handgun in a shoe box in a closet — by taking them off the street, we may have prevented such a tragedy,” Park said. The buyback was conducted a day after a student at a Washington high school brought a gun to school and shot students, then himself. Hudak, the father of a young child, said he’s concerned about the chances of another Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting or a child finding a gun in the home. He said some people brought in older weapons that could have ended up in an estate or garage sale, sold to anyone on the street. “That’s why we do this,” Hudak said. “This gives us much better control.”

Cryan said he drove up to the Plainfield church Saturday morning and saw a line outside. He said a grandmother brought in two rusted loaded weapons that had been stored in an area where her grandchildren could have gained access. “When folks look at these, whether it’s a revolver, an automatic or rifle, they all share one thing in common, they all will never have the opportunity to kill an innocent victim,” Cryan said.

Basically coulda taken a cheap $50 gun, sawed off the stock, and made it an assault weapon and made some money... lol.

Honestly - I saw none of those except maybe one of those break open action revolvers at Linden.

The Linden PD said they got mostly junk.

I'm thinking that a lot of that stuff got turned in at the Plainfield location.... also they pulled up some stuff from the Evidence locker to "fluff" up the numbers.

I saw at least one shotgun in there with a big red "EVIDENCE" sticker on it...

Wonder who got the $100?  The Police Benevolent Assn?

It's a sin to see an M41 buried amongst that pile. It doesn't belong there. The Remington Model 8/81 is also classic piece that shouldn't be there. Both would fetch a good price on the used market. I see a Savage 99 in there, some M1 carbines. What dummy would turn those in? Oh, the horror!

Yeah - I plan on holding a sign up saying that I'll purchase legal firearms that are not stolen and require ID (FID if they have it) and CoE.

It'd be much better if we go as a group as well - safety in numbers.

Someone else had this idea...

Just found this article from 2013
