checko 180 Posted October 24, 2014 I admittedly don't peruse this section very often and did a quick search in here without success. A froend asked me if there any semi-local (nj/pa) classes for wilderness survival / preparedness (think survivorman) Any info would be helpful. Thanks. WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 358 Posted October 24, 2014 I've heard of Tom Brown Jr's Tracker School here in NJ, but he seems to have his share of detractors (a la Yeager).

Celraysoda 7 Posted October 25, 2014 My friend who is former IDF does in home training. He did a few forum members and their families for intruder/ home invasion situations. Not certified in any way but is pretty damn good. Not survival or preparedness but something to consider. PM me if interested.
Sharpdogs 1 Posted November 21, 2014 Www.practicalprimitive.com, I have taken several classes. All were very good to excellent. They are in great meadows, outside of hackettstown

ChachiArcola 0 Posted December 18, 2014 This guy offers an array of training options. He travels to Jersey for private group classes, which is what my friends and I are going with. http://mtnscoutsurvival.com/
Newtonian 453 Posted December 18, 2014 I'll donate my ignorant 2 cents as I do with all wilderness-related survival threads. You're much better served, in my opinion, by learning how to survive in place. Wilderness survival is a fantasy for most people. Without a community (e.g. American Indians) 99% of those who survive a couple of months will eventually die from one thing or another. If you break an arm or an ankle you can't call time out and go to the local hospital, heal, then resume your adventure. You have to be in athlete-level shape. You can't carry a lot of stuff with you, things like food and water, shit you can maybe carry a few days' worth after which you're on your own. If you dream about living off the land you'll be competing with 1000s of other people who by the way are not averse to eating you, personally and literally, and your family as well. You cannot trust anyone you encounter. You have to deal with the elements, and protecting your family if you have one, including very young children. If and when you return to your home it will be occupied by crack addicts and/or probably gutted. Get friendly with your like-minded neighbors. Collectively buy a crate of Mosins and 3-4 tins of ammo. Practice. Stock up on easily stored foods. Get several purification systems so you can tap into the most precious resource, water, that may be within walking distance. And a radio receiver that you can recharge without electricity so you can perhaps hear when the savages are heading your way. SHTF is very, very, very unlikely. Don't plan for a 0.0000001% chance when you should be preparing for a 0.01% chance.
jackandjill 683 Posted January 6, 2015 As with firearms, training is good, but frequent practice is ESSENTIAL. No amount of theory, what you can eat off land, local brook water is going to prepare you for the survival out there, unless you actually go out there frequently. People can "survive" far better than they realize. You can even start with one FULL day Apalachian trail (or your personal choice). Do a 3 day one next, with overnight skills. Once you do about 5 of those 3 day ones, try a full week or a 10 day. Necessity is the mother of all inventions. It will force you to look for answers and you will find those. You will realize what works and what doesnt FOR YOU. At the end of the exercise, you may have excelled at it or found another, better way of survival for yourself. Note: Use common sense and do not try this if the activity can put you or your loved ones at risk. Stay safe.
