Process for private sell of revolver in NJ?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am considering selling my MINT condition S&W Model 19-4 blued revolver 4". I am not familiar at all with the process or even where to start. I just want to be sure its

all done legally! I know the buyer must have "permit to purchase" and FID card, but do I have to fill out a certain forum that needs to go back to local and state police?

EXACTLY, what is the process?

Thanks

Michael

You fill out the seller section of P2P, gun details (I believe) and follow directions on the permit as to who gets each copy. Easy-Peasey

This signature is AWESOME!!!

Exactly this...it is quite easy.

Plus I would have the buyer bring 2 photocopies of their FID (front and back) and driver's license (front and back). Save you the hassle of doing it yourself during the transaction. One copy to be mailed with the P2P to the authorities, the other to attach to your copy of the P2P.

Can you be a bit more specific? "mail to the authorites"? You mean BOTH my local police and state police? Whose attention or department does it get addressed to exactly?

Taken right off a permit now in my possession:

ATTENTION SELLERS

(a) individual sellers complete block A

(b) firearms dealers complete block B

within 5 days after date of transaction, the seller is required to provide a copy of the permit to the following, as provided in 2C:58-3h New Jersey Statutes

white copy forwarded to superintendent of state police (data reduction unit) POB 7068, west trenton, NJ  08628

yellow copy forwarded to the issuing authority

pink copy returned to purchaser

blue copy retained by seller

PLEASE stop adding to the law, PD2K!

Thanks  W2MC!

I also thought there was some type of a forum called "eligibility" that you need to print out from the NJSP site and fill out? No?

The Ceritificate of ElegibilityForm is for Long Gun Sales. Not for pistols.

I ve sold privately and bought privately without FFL s involved. The process is as described by W2MC above. All of the instructions are on the Pistol Permit that the buyer has to have.

Let me clarify - please!

If selling your HG privately - please follow:

1) make up a Private invoice (bill of sale) simple word doc with the following information:

    Sellers Name & address

    Buyers Name & address

Make, model & serial number of the weapon

    Date of sale

Both parties should sign it just for your own personal records

2) Fill out the NJHG permit as listed above

3) Exchange photo copies of your Drivers Lic & FID cards

(only fronts are needed unless there is a change of address stick on one)

4) Seller keeps copy of Bill of Sale, Copy of Buyers ID & Blue copy of NJHGP

5) Buyer keeps copy of Bill of Sale, Copy of Seller's ID & Pink copy of NJHGP

6) Within 7 5 days - Seller mails White copy of NJHGP to NJSP (Address listed on permit)

Within 7  5 days - Seller mails Yellow copy to Police dept that issued the permit to the buyer (address listed on permit)

Always keep copies of your transaction in  a safe place (with other important records) just in case ever needed for

future reference.

Hop this helps - Good Luck!

Step one and three are NOT REQUIRED.

As PK90 has said an uncountable multitude of times an FPID is NOT required for a pistol purchase at all.

I really expect more from our FFLs than spreading additional requirements than those prescribed by law.

No there not needed but always a wise choice since you would have a receipt

if you sold a trailer, so why wouldn't you want one if you were selling a gun?

And since the NJSP require two forms of ID when doing a dealer transaction,

why wouldn't it be prudent to have it in a private sale.

#1 - All of the info described is already on the purchase permit

#2 - Fill out the form, of course

#3 - I merely need to display the info described; there are lines specifically for the FID # for buyer and seller on the purchase permit

#4 - Correct

#5 - Correct

#6 - Incorrect - the form plainly states FIVE days

....

My copy of the P2P signed by both the seller and buyer is my receipt. I don't need anything else.

Let's make this realistic:

Give the seller a form that u make up that states that he has never used the gun for any illegal activity, have him get it notarized.

Sarcasm off

When does the insanity end?

This...... x 10000

Look at a form of ID to confirm that the person is the same listed on P2P ..... and you are done.....

We need to stop making crap up.....

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.....

Buyer hands money to Seller. Seller gives gun to Buyer. Done.

Oh wait. I forgot where I was.

OMG.......THE BAN HAMMER IS GONNA GETCHA, lol!  Paul you better DUCK and COVER, lol! :haha:

:banghead: it's a single-sided 1/2 page form that makes (4) copies, HALF of which goes to the local CLEO and the NJSP FIU and the other half goes to Buyer and Seller.  It's like the Game of Bridge (4 Players) and almost as OLD!  How can you make it any more tedious?   :codemafia:

Jeez. So much for quick and easy.

I usually ask that to see the nj drivers license. I want to be sure that it matches what's on the fid card and permit.

Then I fill out the empty boxes on top of the permit which are details about the gun and date of transaction. I then go to the lower left hand corner of the permit and fill out private party seller info.

I don't make copies of anything. The copy of the permit that I get is all I need.
