Mauser style ejector tuning? (Ruger M77)

Recommended Posts

I have a Ruger M77 Mark II target in 223 which I believe is a Mauser style action. It does not want to eject spent brass. I can pull the bolt back, and the brass will just hang on the boltface with the ejector the sitting on the brass. If I move it forward a 1/16" then back again, it will eject.

Suggestions? I am going to try cleaning again.

You have a sticking ejector due to crud or burrs.  Carefully examine and clean, easy to do.  Careful not to loose any parts.  Reference a parts diagram first and be sure of what you are taking apart. Good Luck!

As T Bill noted, make sure that area is clean and the ejector is riding in its groove so it aligns with the boltface to eject the case when fully rearward.

The ejector should protrude as shown like the one on this boltface:

Some CLP and a pipe cleaner did not help. After a heavy amount of CLP, I got one ejection, then several ejections after messing with the bolt, then it was back to barely ejecting with playing with the bolt. What is it is it seems to be functioning fine and the ejector will be putting pressure on the case. I'll try some brake clean, but unfortunately the ejector is a major SOB to get out and requires removal of the sear to do so. I read it was horrific.

What about "borrowing" someone's ultrasonic? Might help get a bunch of the crap out.

Soak it in Brakleen and then have it take a bath in the ultrasonic? Otherwise, I'd look at taking it apart.

Good luck.

Borrowing an ultrasonic may be difficult.

I'm going to attempt to use some brakleen and if that doesn't work, I will call Ruger and see if they could email me a manual or something. At the same time I will order a spring and probably an ejector too.

I really didn't want to pull the glass either.

One possibility is that you have too much extractor tension, your first ejector contact moves the case slightly from under the extractor, then the second time it can make it out.

Is this new factory brass or reloads where the rim might be getting chewed up?

Have you called Ruger and asked them?

The problem fixed itself I believe. The gallon or so of CLP seems to worked whatever crud out, or freed the probably rusty spring.

I haven't fired the rifle in some time, but I always used commercial brass ammo. The rifle now cleanly ejects brass most of the time now. I plan on buying a spring next time I make an order and putting it in. Thank you all for the advice.

This is one of my favorite rifles to shoot. The stock is a dream, and we inherited it with a Harris bipod and a fantastic Leupold. I want one in .308, but I have a Rem 700 in .30-06 that I can build close enough.

Update: The extractor decided to stop working. I used a ton of brakleen and reoiled it, but it seems to not have helped. Here's a video. I will most likely buy a new ejector and spring from Ruger and just install it.

I can't get the video to embed, sorry.
