Are brake shields legal in NJ?

Recommended Posts

Anytime you install a muzzle devise on a SA rifle with a threaded barrel is must be pinned

as to not be considered one of the "evil features" (Threaded barrel to accept flash hider)

The problem with these new shrouded devises is if you pin the inner section to the barrel,

you still have some sort of threads on the inner section that allow the outer section to be

installed & removed.The law doesn't say what type of threads, it just says "Threaded barrel;

and technically your barrel would still be threaded!

The BIG questions are:

Does the outer "shield" thread onto the inner Muzzle devise AND by placing

a shroud around a Muzzle Break is it considered a Flash Hider.....??????

NJ legal or not, it seems like it defeats both the purpose of a flash hider and of a muzzle break

A muzzle break directs the gasses of combustion backwards to counteract the rifle's recoil.  This device re-directs those gasses forward - defeating the muzzle break.

A flash hider directs the flash down or to the side out of the shooter's line of sight.  This device throws the flash forward again - as if there was no flash hider.

I think the purpose is for when you take classes or shoot indoors.

I'm actually interested in the Surefire one that just came out. It doesn't thread on and I happen to have a socom muzzle brake. I took a class out of state and the people to the side of my battlecomp weren't the happiest. They weren't pissed but they said they could feel the concussion

I ended up with a Massachusetts compliant 10 lb trigger model. If you've replaced your trigger with an aftermarket I'll buy the original one.

What would be your ideal NJ legal muzzle device? Length? Diameter? Placement of holes and/or slots? Open or closed end? Do you want it to reduce recoil, muzzle rise or just look evil?

I am contemplating designing and having one manufactured. It will be long enough to make 14.5" barrels 16", and the threads will be 1/2" x 28 TPI. The sound and flash will not be controlled. It will be tested and found to NOT suppress the flash and it will be advertised that way to satisfy NJ laws.

I purchased a MP40c last November as a CCW  (FL Permit) and I spend about 3 months out of state yearly in NC and Ohio.  I loved the look, and ergonomics  (but feels kinda chunky) and shot DECENTLY with it.

After a few sessions on the range, I bought an Apex Fss trigger kit, and turned the Mp40c into a firearm that I LOVED shooting.  Though it only has the 3.5 inch barrel, it shoots 3-4 inch groups at 10 yards.  To cut down on my ammo bill, I purchased a Storm Lake 40-9 conversion and it has also run flawless.  I wouldnt hesitate to carry it as a 40 cal or 9mm  (with conversion)

The other day, I was at a local shop, and asked to see the MP shield.  A little smaller, but once I put it in my hand, it was the best feeling pistol I have held.  I really enjoy how thin the shield is.

So the question is, do I sell the MP40c and buy  a sheid?  buy a shield and keep the 40c?  The MP compact series and shield are so similar do I even bother getting a shield?     I am so conflicted?!!!

    • I have a like new (only zeroed) PSA Sabre KAC M110 Clone in 7.62x51mm. This is PSA's clone version of the infamous Knights Armament M110. Very high quality, excellent 2 stage trigger, 20" chrome lined barrel, adjustable gas block, and is NJ legal with a pinned Surefire SOCOM muzzle brake.  Radian Raptor charging handle and Radian ambi safety. Upper and lower are billet receivers compatible with all KAC SR-25 and LMT MWS/MARS-H pattern receivers.  Im no where close to being a long range shooter but ive been able to get 0.7 MOA out of it with 175gr federal gold medal match ammo and Im sure the rifle is capable of much better accuracy. Asking $1650 (which is a steal for what you get) at any FFL thats a reasonable distance from Jersey City. I can also ship but that would be on your dime.  Optic/bipod etc not included but can be purchased if interested. Vortex Razor Gen-II HD 3-18x50 FFP with the new EBR-7C MRAD illuminated reticle in a 1.54 reptilia mount. Id include the optic for another $1700. Happy to answer any questions or provide more pictures. Not interested in any trades. Thank you.
