Rob0115 1,105 Posted December 1, 2014 What are you guys doing to clean, just soaking or wet tumbling with no media?
Heavyopp 167 Posted December 1, 2014 Why no media?? -- Is there something special with 5.7 brass?
T Bill 649 Posted December 1, 2014 5.7 has a special lacquer coating that is used to help feeding and such. Heard tumbling is out. Some use 10% solution of simple green in a ultrasonic cleaner. Others just wipe it clean and lube and reload. Number of reloads are few by my understanding.
Rob0115 1,105 Posted December 1, 2014 I have reloaded it for about a year and its a very finicky round and the data isn't abundant. However, accurate and vita vhouri both work well. I'Ve been just wiping the brass but it looks grungy, not that it matters, but I like the brass to be a bit cleaner. Heavyopp there is a coating as pointed out that needs to be preserved. It's also important to have.a good she'll holder. I had one made by a machinist on the FN forum.
Old School 611 Posted December 1, 2014 This doesn't apply but...My precision rifle cases I never tumble. I clean them good with alcohol, lube, size, and reclean to remove lube. Don't know if the alcohol will hurt 5.7 coating.
Rob0115 1,105 Posted December 1, 2014 I can always check to see if the alcohol removes the lacquer. If not I can use something milder like simple green. If not I'm going to soak it in car wash soap and see what happens.
Heavyopp 167 Posted December 2, 2014 so how about a low simmer boil with just water and original formula dawn?
Rob0115 1,105 Posted December 4, 2014 That could be interesting. I'm going to try hot water and soap and see what happens.
Heavyopp 167 Posted December 4, 2014 use the original formula dawn -- gentle but effective with no extra crap added in to bugger up your brass its the stuff they use on wildlife caught in oil spills -- I used it in an engine just last year -- worked great
Rob0115 1,105 Posted December 4, 2014 OK--I'll give it a try.
