Utah or Florida CCW course??

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone, I want to go for the non-NJ resident CCW course.I went on Guns For Hire website and it didn't have the Florida CCW course, there are Utah courses on their calendar but I couldn't find the Fla. course? Do they still do the Florida CCW course? Or is Utah the 'new' course? Can you guys help? Whats the difference between the 2 courses? What exactly is involved in the Utah course? I'd like to sign up for the Utah course,(there's one next week)-can anyone please tell me whats involved from the start of the course till the end? Paperwork, range time,do I have to take any type of firearms safty class? Thanks to all

Utah course is classroom only and is totally about UTAH laws, do not bring guns or ammo to that class. Just your ID and your body. The Florida CCW permit requires live fire training, such as NRA basic pistol or also accepted by Florida is the NJ firearms hunter education class. Offered free by fish and game. If you already have either of those two certificates then you just have to fill out the Florida application, get fingerprints, a passport photo, have your paperwork noterised and send it off to Florida department of agriculture with your check. GFH will help you fill out the paperwork, take your picture, & noterise your paperwork. Costs about $50 for that and they have the packet with the application there.

As correctly mentioned by DeerSlayer, pretty much any formal firearm-related education will work for FL permit (NRA First Step, NRA Basic, Hunting education course from any state etc.). Application is also something you can fill in in 20 minutes of your time, so I frankly don't see what to pay $50 for. The hardest part about FL application is about fingerprints - you have to be fingerprinted in a law enforcement agency (local PD or sheriff's office) and in fact you have to do it regardless of if you fill everything else by yourself or use some help. You can order a fingerprint card on https://licensing.freshfromflorida.com/forms/FormsRequest790.aspx

(do it now, order 2-3 in case you spoil one, they send them pretty quickly).

If you don't have any certificate, live in Northern NJ and want to optimize your spending on CCW permits (okay, let me say it straight - you want to do it as cheap as possible), I would highly recommend Damon Finch combined Utah & Florida course (google it, you'll find it quickly) - it costs $100, held in Newburgh, NY, and will get you 2 CCW permits in one go. I took this course a year ago myself and in terms of price this is a bargain you'll probably not find in NJ...

Utah laws? It is still good in a lot of states though, right? Mainly looking for DEL., and NC. GFH does all the paperwork, fingerprints etc. for $200

No I don't have any NRA classes, certificates. So if I take the Utah course I do not need to take any Nra classes?

Yes from Bloomfield,NJ

Both Utah and Florida carry permits are valid in ~30 states with some overlaps / difference. You can find a nice map here - http://www.usacarry.com/concealed_carry_permit_reciprocity_maps.html

DE and NC recognize both UT and FL permits (at least now, based on the map I provided a link above).

Utah course itself is sufficient to get a Utah permit, but by itself will likely not be sufficient to get FL permit.

For Utah permit fingerprints CAN be taken by pretty much anyone, so you can be fingerprinted at GFH or any other course facility.

For Florida permit fingerprints MUST be taken by a sworn LEO anyway.

Download the CCW USA app on your smart phone. It's updated often, and for $1.99 it's full of useful reseprosity information. It has a map of all the states your permit is valid in and also has links to all the firearms laws for every state. Very useful.

I guess for people like me who's county sheriff doesn't offer fingerprinting and local coverage is NJSP we don't have any other option besides going to a company like GFH or RTSP for one of their courses right?

No there are private companies around the state that offer Morpho track prints. For a fee of course...

But honestly it's just way easier to pay the $50 to GFH and make the whole ordeal a one stop shop for Florida. That's if you already have some type of accepted live fire training under your belt already.

It was pretty simple they had the whole package of paperwork ready for me when I arrived, filled it out they notorized the application, took my picture, copied my NRA basic pistol certificate, and did my prints in one place in half an hour. I filled out the check to the FL department of agriculture, and dropped that baby in the mail on the way home, to enjoy the rest of the afternoon watching the Giants... the really cool thing about GFH is you don't have to go to them if it's super far for you to drive to woodland Park. They have instructors that travel the state north, south, east, & west. Just look for a course date in your area. Or get about 6-10 people together on one date at one place and they will send a guy to you. Anthony Colandro already thought of all of this for us, take advantage of it. And know your spending your hard earned $ with an organization that fully supports your right to Keep and Bare arms.

Or you can make an appointment with a place that does prints, go to the post office for a picture, hit up a notery public for that part (maybe free at your bank during their normal hours, you know when regular people are working) Order the paperwork from Florida, and make your own copy of the NRA basic pistol certificate. How much is your time worth? how many days did it take to coordinate this task? how much money did you really save?

Gun for Hire is the way to go for sure. I've talked some people on this forum that seem to think you still need to go to the PD for fingerprinting since FL requires a LEO to do it. You seem to have first hand knowledge that is just not true. Am I missing something?

I'm not 100% sure if they will accept a Morpho track print card from a private place that's not using LEO to preform the actual printing. But at GFH a LEO is on the payroll there to do the prints so no worries since you're going that route. When I went, a cop in uniform did my prints in Woodland Park. At the Utah class i took at Red Dot firearms, Charlie Padua taught the class & did my prints, he is retired Leo.

Just wanted to update my progress. Went to GFH the other night. Man what a place. I passed it twice on the road due to the fact that it looks like no other gun range I've been to.

Charlie fingerprinted me and took my photo for $10. App was already filled out and had made a copy of my NRA cert myself.

Popped it in the mail the next day.

I couldn't be happier. I will definitely go back to shoot.

Yeah buddy the place is top notch. Glad to hear your paperwork is sent out. Should have you permit sometime in March.
